Name of commonly sold red 'rebloomer?'

Hi everyone! Haven't been around here much, mostly due to GardenWeb's new no-longer-user-friendly format, but I have a question and I think this is a great place to ask it. We moved to this property almost 2 years ago, and the previous owner had some bearded irises planted down by the creek. They all had tags - the plastic ones with a picture like you'd get in a nursury - but one washed away when the creek flooded last spring. Well, the iris it belonged to bloomed last year and was FABULOUS. A blooming fool - even in the wet and shade down there - and the most lovely red (maroon-burgundy) self. I'd like to try to put it's name back on it, and here's where I'm hoping you can help. I'm guessing by the type of tag it had and the other irises and perennials here that it is a very commonly sold iris by nurseries and catalogs, and was probably sold as a rebloomer (although I don't know that it actually does.) You know how some questionable rebloomers are sold by companies as rebloomers? Well, the other irises here were 'Rare Treat,' 'Chasing Rainbows,' 'Enchanted One,' and 'Autumn Circus.' Might not have been sold as a rebloomer, but those other cultivars make me mighty suspicious. So, have you seen any of those "Reblooming Collections" that included a red? Or a nursery/catalog red you know of? I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I'd really appreciate your ideas.

P.S. YES, all the bearded irises have been moved away from the creek and up into full sun and good drainage. Poor things!

The only rebloomer I recognize is Autumn Circus so I doubt it was a rebloomer collection.

None of the places I've ordered from sent tags with pics. Have only seen that at nurseries.

Since the introduction years of these iris range from 1987 to 1998 and hybridizers are Hager (2), Ernst & Schreiners --- well, that doesn't help either.

An accurate photo may help. Height, branching, bud count and bloom time are also used in IDs.

Thank you, Iris Gal! You helped jog my brain. For some reason I spaced and was thinking 'Rare Treat' was a rebloomer (it's not) and had switched 'Painted Clouds' with 'Chasing Rainbows'. Oops. No, not rebloomers, then. (But 'Enchanted One' is listed on the RIS checklist and commonly sold as one.) So I guess just a commonly sold red. I do have a pic somewhere (desperately need to download pics off camera and organize them - that's the trouble with memory cards with tons of memory, LOL) but I didn't note bud count, height, branching, etc. because when it bloomed last year it was still down by the creek (very wet, partly shady) and was one of only a few irises that actually did bloom last spring because of the late freeze. The moving water must've helped, because 3 of the 11 irises that bloomed last spring were by the creek (out of approx. 400 cultivars). So anyway, I didn't feel I could count its bloom last spring as "normal" bloom, despite the fact that it bloomed very nicely.

I may never ID this iris, but I'd lay money it's something like 'Red At Night,' Warrior King,' or 'War Chief' that ends up at nurseries and sold by companies like Brecks, because I'm sure the previous owner didn't buy them from an iris grower. I was just hoping I might be able to compile a list of likely possibilities - like if I asked the same question, only a white iris, the answer would almost certainly be 'Immortality.' (Or 'Lacy Snowflake' for a non-rebloomer...)

You have some nice pictures of the "Bumble Bee Moth" (Hemaris diffinis) feeding on your Zinnias. We have them here too and they are a good example of the art of mimicry in nature - a moth disguised to look like a Bumble bee. They have many common names, including Hummingbird Moth for their ability to hover like a Hummingbird...Your Duranta is very pretty. I've seen them sold as standards (tree form) here in spring and they are just gorgeous. I grow another type of Duranta Erecta named Cuban Gold which I grow for the vivid yellow foliage not the flowers. It takes pretty much everything our summers can throw at it. It's not hardy either though so I have to order it every spring.....A really nice selection of Cannas too. They sure have improved the colors of not only the flowers but the leaves too...As for the daylilies, they are yellow, which is one of my favorite colors, so they are great....thanks for the visit to your garden.....Maryl

Rose Du Roi does not have the lateral outgrowths on the sepals, and the glandular growth that gave the mossy smell from the resin you got on your finger tips when you rubbed your finger over the the buds/sepals. And the flowers are not as perfect as the flowers on Rose De Rescht. Some Rose de Rescht have probably been sold as Rose Du Roi adding to the confusion and GST theory that Rose Du Roi is and Rose de Rescht is the same rose. I wonder why a Estimated rosarian like GST could make such a mistake when there is such obvious differences between Rose De Rescht and Rose du Roi? A look on the sepals and you are able to distinguish the two roses. Also the foliage on Roi is lighter green and more coarse than Rose de Rescht. I suspect those that complain about the foliage on their Rose De Reshts grow Rose Du Roi. The Colour of Rose de Rescht blooms change a lot. The Amount of sunlight and temperature makes a big difference. Sometimes almost crimson, sometimes magenta-red other times more pink and sometimes almost pinkish/purple.: Here some photos of Rose De Rescht: A bud (see the shape of sepals and glandular growth similar to your rose): A nice bloom: some more blooms: here a spent bloom (looks almost excacly like the ones in your 2. post): So this one was very easy to identify. I'm probably not the best person to answer that question, as I now try to follow the advice to let just one bud develop and open just to make sure I've received the correct plant. Then, hard as it may sound, one is supposed to cut the scape off. The idea is to allow a new plant to focus on getting established, rather than on channeling its energy on the very-energy-intensive labor of actually producing flowers. But generally, a spring-planted daylily will probably bloom for you. This assumes a mature fan, not something undersized. You probably should not expect new plants to look as good as they might -- bud count will probably be lower, perhaps branching, too (anyone? am I correct about that?). I've seen blooms on new plants that are smaller than their registered dimensions and/or with colors that aren't great. Also, problems with form. For example, I remember the FFO (first flower open) on WHEN BEARS FLY (Gossard 2003). This is registered as an unusual form (UF) and brown. My plant's FFO was an odd dark color, small, and so deformed that most of the petals either could not be seen at all because they were twisted behind the main plane of the bloom or could be only partly seen. Which is to say, a real dog. To be fair, not only was it an FFO, but it was in a pot. But if you were to compare this summer's blooms to that FFO, you'd never guess it was the same daylily. Not all daylilies will disappoint like that of course. Some look great right from the start. And for me, in zone 6, some southern daylilies never look as good as they do that very first season after they've left their southern homes. Sorry for the lengthy ramble, but the point is, even if your new daylilies bloom in their first year, and they probably will, don't be disappointed if they, well, disappoint you. Many need a year (or more!) before they strut their stuff. I've had some, especially from some hybridizers, that don't do much for two or even three years. I don't fault the hybridizer or the plant -- it's just the way things can be in zone 6. Example: DAY OF MAGIC (Polston 2006) http://www.daylilies.org/DaylilyDB/detail.php?id=155283&name=Day of Magic DAY OF MAGIC is registered as "pink with gold edge above green throat." I don't have very many pinks, so I'd been looking forward to its blooms. Serious disappointment with its off, muddy, in-between, kind of washy rosy vaguely mauve-ish color for its first two years. Probably my least favorite daylily color. Come to think of it, a color I don't want to see anywhere. Really wanted to toss it in the compost pile, frankly, or give it away. But this year, wow, it was a beautiful pink that I had to look at every day. The exception to all of the above would be field-grown daylilies dug for you, ideally including soil, and then promptly replanted in your garden. They should happily continue performing without skipping a beat. Oh, and finally, back to your question about reds. I misread and thought you were in zone 10. Sorry! Plus, I thought about it, and I do have a couple of reds that should be moved out of hot afternoon sun. One of them I already mentioned: GASPING FOR BREATH. This one does get hot afternoon sun and is also too close to both a stone patio and stone and stucco house walls. It wants a cooler, shadier afternoon, that's for sure.

Sharon: Thanks to your rose list, I remember how impressive that Easy Elegance which I bought at HomeDepot ... there was more blooms than leaves. The pot had large chunk composted pine-bark mixed with soil, well-drained. It also had Osmocote-like blue round tiny pellets mixed in. I suspect those blue-round-pellets have acid (sulfur) to neutralize alkaline tap. I once did a research on trace elements in chemical fertilizers, and Osmocote was the only one THAT DID NOT RESULT IN ANY NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY whatsoever. I didn't recommend Osmocote, since those brown granules didn't work on my herbs in pots. However, that type was discontinued, and there's improved formula in the Osmocote for flowers, NPK 14-14-14, it has a perfect rating on Amazon, can't find a negative review. I tested many chemicals vs. organics in pots. Organics work best for the ground, given microorganism and earthworms to break it down. Chemicals isn't best for clay soil, which retains salt well. Chemicals is instant-food, and work immediately in pots, or well-drained loamy soil. The danger of chemicals is salt-accumulation in pots, esp. with soluble fertilizer. After seeing those blue-round slow-released granules, and tons of blooms on Easy Elegance "Grandma's Blesisng" in a pot ... I'm sold on such, if I can find it. I'm going to test the perfect-rating Oscomote and compare that with organics for pots. I still remember how Sonia Rykiel gave me 15 blooms in a pot, fertilized with MG soluble, plus organics (alfalfa mixed in potting soil). The question is: Are oscomote pH-dependent? Does it require neutral tap, or acidic rain water to break down? The old brown Oscomote that was discontinued, it could not even dissolve in rain water !! I gave MG-soluble to Frederic Mistral in the ground, and he was still stingy. But when I brought the pH of my tap water down with sulfate of potash, plus trace elements in molasses, I got 40+ buds/blooms. My tap water is so alkaline, that MG soluble crystallized at the bottom ... It worked only when I put used lemon to help it dissolve. I am still awaiting the Great red iris for my garden! Hope to see the picture of yours when you get them organized. (huge memory cards do have a downside!).

I've noticed beard color and haft markings very helpful to identify reds.

400 cultivars! Are you going to be in the business?

Weird - I responded to RH yesterday, saw the response, and it's gone! Let's try this again, LOL.

Spartan is lovely - great pic! I don't think it's a match for mine, as I don't remember yellow or orange on the hafts and shoulders, and no white below the beards. But I'll keep it in mind, and have another look when mine blooms again. Thanks!

Iris Gal, one of these years I'll get around to organizing my photos - I still have pics from the 2003 National I need to organize. Yikes. I have a good excuse, though - since then, we've moved twice (well, 3 times if you count a temporary apartment) - from VA to OH (2004) to IL (2006). For DH's job. I told him if I have to move my irises again, I might be forced to shoot him! I am pretty excited about this red NOID - obviously, it's not RED, but as red irises go, this one is pretty nice, and it seems to grow well, too. Any bearded iris that can survive the conditions down by the creek for a few years is a keeper! (I planted some JIs down there last summer and they croaked!) And a red to boot? Amazing - my other reds don't grow that well.

Am I going to go into business? Well, maybe, someday. It'd be fun to make this addiction pay for itself, that's for sure! For now, I'll trade or give away the extras, and have thought of selling some in a garage sale or at the local farmer's market. Sadly, the number used to be over 500, but I lost more in the moves than I've added. But that number will go back up, I'm sure! Mostly I have a lot because I'm an addict - belong to AIS, HIPS and TBIS (need to join the other sections, too) and just finished the last of my apprentice judge's requirements last month, so next year I'll be an accredited judge. And as a judge, one is "required" to grow new cultivars for evaluation. Oh, darn. ;-)
