Smallest flowering Hydrangea EVER!!

This spring I ordered a Cityline Paris Hydrangea online (have no idea where) and I potted it up on the deck. It was very small, maybe 2 inches tall, in a pint sized pot. Had maybe 10 leaves on it, and one stick. So, I bought another one in a 3 gallon pot at HD, and put it in the container. I moved the little tiny one up front. Yesterday, I happened to notice that it decided to flower. How cute!!! Christy :)

Off chance, anyone know what is eating the leaves?? Whatever it is is eating everything else, as well. Doesn't seem to affect the growth, and I haven't seen any JB's.

Well, congratulations, Christy!

Since the plant is so tiny and the leaves are in contact with mulch, the leaf cutter can be just about anything, insects like JBs to caterpillars. You may want to stop by un-announced at night to see if you see the culprit(s). But normally, hydrangeas do not suffer much from leaf cutting pests. By that, I mean a pest will not defoliate a whole bush like JBs can due to some roses. I have some leaf cutter bees in the area and I take no action because their damage is limited or occurs late in the season (when the leaves are bound to dry out in the fall anyway).

You may want to take a picture for reference purpose too and compare it to another taken in a few days or a week. If there appears to be no change, the pest may have moved on. This is an useful way to track such problems.

Seems to me like a slugs damage.
Though slugs are not particularly attracted to hydrangeas they may eat ground hugging leaves sometimes.
Don't worry about it.
JB are not intrested in hydrangeas except one notable exception, H.aspera. For some unknown reason they found its fusy leaves very appealing and before I noticed they were able completely sceletonize some leaves.
Was forced to use Sevin, which I keep as a last remedy.

Re: flower.
I would of cut it off. Such small plant don't need to spend energy on a flower, it better to be used for the roots development.

No flowers for me on my Arabicums. My oldest one that I repotted into a Papercrete pot that I made. I just repotted it again into a different pot as it was not happy in the new one. I am assuming it may be a combination of things. New pot may have been leeching limestone from itself, lime in concrete doing something and also it seemed to retain a lot of moisture. Time will tell. Younger Arabicums of different sizes all making good progress. Interesting thing. I pruned a few of my Obesum's last year and again this year and they all produced considerably smaller blooms this year. Not in relation to your Arabicums, just wonder if pruning that often almost starts to miniaturize as in Bonsai's? Rick

Thanks this was a helpful thread. I have not looked on Houzz for this kind of content before. I too find these dwarf plants are not very dwarf and need pruning. Here in Pacific NW pruning these kinds of hydrangeas (Oakleaf) is easy and its harder to screw up the timing and lose the flowers unlike the mop head hydrangea. Oakleaf also need less water so that is ideal. I was just at a garden this morning where their mature Oakleaf had simply eaten the entire front foundation planting. It was hacked back to a 4' high clump but we are going to replace it since it is crowding out a native ribes. I am going to recommend Munchkin and assume that with pruning it can be maintained at 4 x 4. I do love the smaller flowers and the bark of Sikes Dwarf however. Z6-8 Photo is probably Snow Queen. It layers so beautifully. Any thoughts between choosing Sikes Dwarf and Munchkin anyone?

What sun exposure are your F&E's planted in? I have F&E, Peppermint and Together that I planted last summer and mine look nothing like yours. I only got 2 blooms off of my F&E and none off of the other 2. Peppermint formed buds, but the flowers never had any petals after they opened. It looked very strange. My plants are also much smaller. They are in full sun until 2:00 p.m. and I am wondering if I need to move them to more shade. Like yours, mine died to the ground this winter. I have a Let's Dance planted in the same sun exposure and it has been wonderful. It was loaded with flowers most of the summer and is 3 times the size of my F&E's. Your pictures look great. I recommend these trees as a cold hardy lime replacement. I really like them, and the small fruit are the juiciest citrus I’ve ever seen. They reliably produce full-size fruit for me every year, regardless of how small the tree is.

Luis - does leaf cutter bee damage occur only late in the season? I had several hosta with damage that someone diagnosed as from leaf cutter bees - this happened early in the spring. See pic below - I originally thought this was from rabbits...
