Our friends in TN have been hammered twice in one week by vicious tornadoes. Please ease our worry and check in.

There was hail and wind and a power failure just before closing time where I live, but fortunately when I got home, there had been no hail here, six miles from town. We did get 3.50" of rainfall over night.

Flowers this morning are ruined. I had especially wanted to see BIG APPLE give maiden bloom, but I cannot tell much about it. PINK CHAMPAGNE held up exceptionally well. The arilbreds with their thinner substance were hit really bad.

But, there are tons of buds coming.

I hope everyone concerned escaped unharmed.

Walter, My town was hammered last Sunday night. I am in the town that lost 16. I am so truly blessed to be able to say that the only thing I did have damaged was my irises. The hail was marble to dime sized here. But considering everything else that happened I can hardly complain about my irises.
My husband didn't work all week and the factory is planning to start back on Monday.The plants power station was blown away. He lost 3 co workers to the storm. My daughter went back to school on Tuesday and learned that one of her classmates was among the ones killed. It has really been tough for our small community where everyone knows everyone.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all the people that were in the path of last night's storms.

The rumblings had calmed a bit when they came through about 9 this morning. Thanks for thinking of me. Jean may have dodged tornadoes as they hit to the north of her. There are some folks who come on here who are from that part of the world (north of Nashville near the KY line) and it would be good to hear from them. (Jean and I have each had a tornado in the past decade, but our houses were still standing afterwards.) Also Tellico Plains had some really bad winds according to radar and I hope it missed our rose friends' part of the Little T valley. Local news hasn't given details on there. Pray for Jacson TN. Those folks seem to be in their own version of tornado alley; the west side of Jackson seems to get hit and hit again. A bit more than ten years ago, Jackson Rose Society used to host the Tenarky district midwinter meeting in mid or late February, and at least two years there was winter tornado damage still visible from winter storms. Poor Union University. At least their students knew how to protect themselves. The local news just said "Unusual winter tornadoes" Balderdash. This isn't all that uncommon and people are going to have to learn to be vigilant when fast moving cold fronts ride over warm weather.

As members of the GardenWeb Tennessee Gardening Forum, we will be hosting our 9th Biannual Middle Tennessee Plant Swap on May 20th. There will be over 100 gardeners to attend from all over the state of Tennessee as well as our surrounding sister states. We have a covered dish lunch and a guest lecturer as well as several hours of swapping all kinds of plants and garden related items. The location is on the beautifully scenic Buffalo River south of Hohenwald, Tennessee at the Buffalo Canoeing Campground. You can camp, canoe the river, go fishing and load up on great plants! If you make it to one of our swaps then you'll be hooked for life! The speaker for the Spring swap is Marty DeHart, host of NPTs A Volunteer Gardener. Marty is an expert at propagation techniques; cultivating a wide variety of plants and shrubs suited for this climate; hosts the "What's New" at the garden center segment on Volunteer Gardener and showcases groups of plants that share similar growing requirements. She is also the head grower of a local nursery. Her topic will be about native plants that are great garden subjects for shade, including dry shade -- even difficult places like under pine trees. There will be some plant demonstration, and others that folks can view at their leisure on a laptop slideshow. She will cover how to grow them and also explore happy combinations, like what goes great with Hosta, Hellebores, etc. Mostly she will focus on perennials, but also include some shrubs, too. Barb, The Fall 2011 East Tennessee Plant Swap will be held at Cheryl Peters' house, 7704 Dave Road, Knoxville, TN 37938 on Saturday, September 24, 2011. We often hold the swap at one of the local parks, but due to schedule conflict and other reasons, Cheryl has volunteered to host this fall's swap at her house. She has a nice yard with plenty of shade and a big garage in case of rain. The location is on your side of Knoxville, so it should be easy for you to get to without having to go through town. Check out our website, linked below. There is more information on the FAQ page and an interactive map on the Map&Directions page. You can also prearrange swaps if you like on the Forum page. We haven't really posted an official announcement yet, so there isn't any activity on our Swap Forum yet. It should start picking up in a few weeks. You don't have to prearrange, but many people find it helpful to arrange at least some of their swaps before hand so that they get a better idea of what to bring and what to expect. We'll also have a potluck lunch, so bring your favorite picnic/finger-food dish. If you don't have much to swap yet, PLEASE DON'T WORRY! We always seem to have an over abundance of neat stuff. Some of us are more interested in finding good homes for all our extras than really doing a lot of even swaps. Hi Betty, Welcome to the area ! There are actually two plant swaps in East TN, the Knoxville swap and the East TN Plant swap which is going to be held up closer to the mountains. By attending both you'll get a wide variety of plants and helpful tips I'm sure, and you'll probably meet and see some of the same people at both. We're working on a website right now so if you'll email me I'll send you all the information. Oh and the West TN plant swap is awesome, I will be there this spring, and it's well worth the drive. oh i am so sorry to read of all the tragedy in your area... you must all be very grateful that you have all faired so well. i hope you all remain safe during your frightening weather.

I knew your were in that area but wasn't quite sure exactly where.

Your irises will come back and maybe you'll get some bloom later.

If not, come to Memphis in May; the show is on the 7th at Goldsmith Garden Center.

We had a lot of high winds and rain but no major damage. There was a tornado spotted near us off Houston Levee near Collierville and we were worried but escaped unharmed. The irises look great with stalks and buds galore.

I'm so sorry to hear about the losses in Dyer County littlebit. I was thinking of you when I heard about the tornadoes there and hoping you and yours were well. Glad to hear you check in. If you need any new iris starts this summer just let me know and I'll be glad to share what I have.

Thanks for the offers on the irises, but mine will be fine. Last Sun, I didn't have hardly any bloomstalks showing so the only thing that was really damamged was the foliage that was bent over. My SDB's were putting up bloom stalks and some were blooming already. I have noticed that the SDB's that have opened this week have had tears in the blooms. But like I said we were so lucky and there is no way I can complain about my irises. I will still have blooms others have nothing at all left.

Walter, our AIS show is on the Sat before the Memphis show. We may show up in Memphis just so I can meet you!

Walter, Where is the Goldsmith garden center in Memphis? What time does it start and is it open to the public?

I hope I can go. I was asked to be a judge but had to back out.

The show is Sunday, May 7 and should open at 1 p.m. It is free and open to all.

I hesitate to give directions. I am coming up from the south and yawl are coming in from the east.

If I take I-240 E, I exit at Getwell and continue on it to where it ends at Park. (Some exit at Perkins, but there usually seems to be some perpetual construction there). Turn right off Getwell on to Park and go east a few blocks and then turn left on Cherry and into the park. When you make the turn off Cherry, you can see the conservatory.

Sorry for the boring post for people who do not live close to Memphis.

All is well here in Murfreesboro (Middle Tenn). Two nasty hail storms Friday. No damage to home, but irises and hosta's didn't fair too well. Thanks Walter for your concern. Pray for our neighbors up north in Gallatin and those east in McMinnville.
