Hydrangea 101 Question. re: old wood

Hi All,

I'm new, so please excuse the basic nature of this question.

I inherited and planted an orphan Glowing Embers Hydrangea last year, and this spring (not knowing any better) I cut it back pretty aggressively. It has tons of beautiful, lush green growth and has grown about 2 feet tall, but NOT 1 bloom in sight!

Q. Is it not blooming because I cut off all of the old wood!? :( Am I supposed to prune it?

It's in mostly sun (planted on the NW corner of a porch) and is watered not too much or too little. This season I've given it maybe two feedings with Miracle Grow. I don't know what my soil Ph is, but it's in close proximity to Arborvitae and Boxwood, both of which are doing awesome this year.

Thanks for reading,

Jim
