Creating a Tree-form Unique Hydrangea

I just bought a Unique h. hoping to train it to tree form. Unfortunately, I realize there's no strong vertical stem. Could I grow a new plant from a soft-wood cutting in May/July, root in sand/peat, then, just remove all the bottom horizontal stems as it grows? I understand they grow fast so I was thinking I could do this fairly quickly, maybe 2-4 years I might have a decent-sized tree? Or should I cut all the stems on this one to the ground in spring, and just keep one stem that pops up? I really like those tree forms (but not their price heheh!)
