Need help with tall bearded irises

Turkey manure and irises?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and need some advice about my tall bearded irises. Several years ago the irises were growing very well. I thought I could improve the growing conditions even more by raising the bed a few inches, so I brought in some very coarse 40-60 grit bricklayers sand from a local gravel pit. After all, excellent drainage should help prevent rot, right? Well, the irises have never done as well. Each spring I broadcast a little 10-10-10. Does anyone have some suggestions? (I have some turkey manure, which is high in phosphorus, but probably high in nitrogen as well. Would that be good or bad to put a little around the tubers? Don

The improved drainage was a good idea, but if you filled those top few inches with nothing but coarse sand, you created an almost sterile and void environment for the irises in terms of essential nutrients. Rainfall probably leaches nitrogen out of the sand almost immediately, and bearded irises do need some nitrogen. Perhaps a balanced foliar feed several times a year would help keep the plants adequately fed.

I don't know about turkey manure, but I wouldn't recommend any manure that isn't very well composted. You might be better off removing 1/2-3/4 of the sand from that bed and mixing the remaining sand with some rich topsoil. You'd still have excellent drainage by virtue of the raised bed, but the soil would be more nutrient-retentive for the irises.

If you raised the soil level, the irises may be too deep in the ground now, too.

I too would advise patience but do not be surprised if those leafless dried rhizomes refuse to put out babies. They may have been dug as early as June! One word of caution about watering beardeds in heavy soil. Do allow the top 4-6 inches of soil to dry out before re-watering. Beardeds often rot during long rainy seasons in poorly draining soil . Some cultivars tolerate wetness better than others. If a rhizome feels soft it is beginning to rot. Dig it up and allow to dry in the shade before replanting. I plant mine so the top of the rhizome shows. (one established tall bearded I dug had roots 18" long! No wonder they're drought resistant)

I would love to trade for some irises. I have some day lillies that should be blooming soon. I'll take pictures and send to you. I have ajuga, elephant ears and a few cannas, but nothing special. Signet, remember you are also a zone 6 which means that you get frost a lot later than we do in zone 2 or 3. So, being that replanting the iris needs to be with enough time to get the iris re-established before freeze up here in zone 2 - 3, that means that replanting should be done no later than the end of August. A friend of mine has hundreds and hundreds of iris here in the Brandon area and that is the advice that she gives. There is a problem though when buying irises in the fall here on the prairies because the Ontario and BC growers will not send out the irises to the nurseries and box stores until about the middle of September and then it is usually only the tall German irises and the occasional SDB that are sent. They do not ideally have time to get established before our freezeups. So, now, when buying some of these, I have grown them over in the house for the winter and planted them out into the garden in the spring. Personally, so far, I have never had a problem here with irises heaving out of the ground. I rather think that I would be unable to stomp them back into the ground because once my ground is frozen, it is frozen. A friend of mine lives in Dartmouth and she does have perennials heave out of the ground in the winter. I know that she is rather frustrated sometimes when it happens. Do you feel the same way Signet? I have had problems with deer coming and pulling/nibbling on the iris just before freezeup and thus leaving the iris on the top of the soil for the winter, but that is a different story. Brenda

Not adequately established: Some iris cultivars need a year or more to fully establish in their new locations before blooming. If you relocate them frequently, they may never become well enough established to bloom. Plant irises far enough apart to allow for several years' growth before requiring division. Inadequate sun: Bearded irises need at least 6 hrs of direct sun a day to bloom well. Nutrient deficiencies: Consider having a soil test run to make sure your soil provides all necessary plant nutrients in appropriate amounts and fertilize according to the recommendations returned with the soil analysis. Soil that has been growing irises for many years without amendments or fertilization is probably nutritionally depleted. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. If bearded irises are fed high-nitrogen fertilizers, they may grow lush foliage with little or no bloom. Inappropriate watering: Bearded irises might not bloom well if they experience periods of extended drought, though the plants themselves are quite drought-tolerant. Conversely, bearded irises that are overwatered are often susceptible to bacterial soft rot and fungal leaf spot infections. If you provide supplemental water, water deeply no more than once a week. Soaker hoses are preferable to overhead watering to avoid spreading leaf diseases from plant to plant. Planted too deeply: Bearded iris rhizomes should be planted so the tops of the rhizomes are at or slightly below the soil surface. If planted too deeply, bearded irises will grow leaves but may not flower. Be careful, also, not to allow mulch to cover the rhizomes. Make sure any mulch is pushed away from the rhizomes. Overcrowding: Overcrowded clumps often quit blooming until they are divided, OR irises closely planted with other plants may not bloom well (or at all) if they are struggling to compete for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Weeds: There are certain weeds and grasses that are so aggressive they can inhibit the performance or even survival of plants they invade (Canada thistle being one of them). Keep the weeds and grasses away from your irises. Ill health: Irises that are diseased or under insect attack may not be able to bloom until the problem is eliminated. Late freezes: Killing freezes that are severe enough to damage iris foliage within six to eight weeks prior to normal bloom can abort developing stalks even if the stalks are not yet showing above the foliage. Immature rhizome: Rhizomes will not bloom until they are mature. If you have planted smaller rzs, you probably need only wait for them to grow a bit before they'll bloom. Irregular bloomer: All irises are not created equal. While some irises may bloom very regularly in your garden once established, others may never do any better than blooming once every several years ... or perhaps never blooming at all. The same cultivars that bloom beautifully and reliably for a neighbor down the road or a friend across the country may do nothing more than sulk in your own garden. The only way to discover which irises will perform best for you is to keep trying different cultivars, growing them properly, and replacing those that don't meet expectations within 2-3 years after planting. Rather than just piling it on your old soil you may want to dig it into your old soil. Thus you should improve drainage and soil fertility. You didn't mention ever dividing your iris. If you haven't, my own rule of thumb is a handwidth between all fans. When they get more crowed than that the whole beds health seems to suffer.

gmason, I read with a great deal of interest your comment re. spacing and thinning. Wouldn't this mean you have to thin almost yearly? All of my fans withing the clumps are much closer together than a handwidth.

More and more in urban gardens, the luxury of rotating beds, resting soil, building a new bed is gone as building lots get smaller. The temptation is to plant too many iris in too little space. The spacing I mentioned is minimum spacing for good health.

gldno1, I believe the difference may be in rhizome size between those grown in MO and those grown in gmason's garden which, if I'm remembering correctly, is located somewhere on the West Coast in "Iris Heaven". If gmason's rhizomes grow to the typically gargantuan size of many of the West Coast iris growers, then the fans in his clumps will naturally be spaced further apart. Midwestern rhizomes, however, typically mature at much smaller sizes, so the fans in a clump will be naturally spaced more closely together.

What I have heard is that a fertilizer with a slightly lower first number is best - so something like 6-10-10. This helps prevent too much vegetative growth and promotes bloom.

Poultry manure is very hot. Make sure it's well aged or it will burn. I've even seen it eat through metal sheds.

Add a little lime, now or late fall. Takes time to work. Don't lime beardless iris, can kill or seriously set them back. Unless your sitting on one of the rare limestone deposits on North americas east coast a little lime won't hurt, probably will help and is real cheap. Bearded iris like calcium. Little bit of epsom salts sprinkled in now and then too.
Because the east coast soils and bedrock are much older than the west coast a lot of the easily solubable nutrients have gone too deep for most plants to reach. Calcium and magnesium being the big ones.

Nitrogen grows foliage, phosphorus grows blooms.
Iris actually like the soil a little on the poor side.

I'd mix the sand and soil up too. After bloom season would be best. Too much disturbance and they may abort blooms. Probably won't bother the plants much but inorder to gain strength from a transplant a lot of plants won't bother using strength flowering.

I don't use much in the way of commercial fertilizer but I have spread an all purpose 10-10-10 after bloom with no problem. Light feeding and once or twice after bloom. Plenty to hold them until spring. You really don't want to kick them into high gear while the soil is still real wet or too late in the fall either. Honestly they are better off a little hungry.
