J.Maples :Oshu Shidare, Tana, Kashima Yatsubusa ; do you grow?

We grow about 55 j maples here at the 'retum and we are considering adding these 3 because we were so taken by them when we visited Acer Gardens in Deep River Ct. last week.(inventory 75+ j. acers) They were all good sized, potted, heeled in, and growing in a z. 5b full sun field, so we don't know if that accounts for the diff between their description in other sources, and reality in a semi shaded environment.

Oshu shidare we saw were all brick red, NOT maroon , w/ bright green bark. They boldly stood out from all the many other reds they had.

Does Tana's red tipping fade w/ july?

This rare yatsu had lovely flushed red new foliage; is that normal for it?(vertrees doesn't mention that)

thanks so very much for your help.

best,

mindy

at my house, they're just as you described. Fabulous.

I live in a weird area that's classed by National Parks and Planning as more a N. Fla/S. GA climate. I have ONLY full sun.

I can tell you they would definitely benefit from some afternoon shade, but after 3 years without the tree that created my shade garden, they're full sun survivors. They bronze in full, unrelenting sun. The fall colors right now are breathtaking and mezmerizing.

    A worty purchase.
