Dry-Wet soil around recent planting

Recently (2 days ago) planted a hydrangea purchased in a 8" plastic pot. Post planting, the root system (from the plastic pot) sits in the ground surrounded by the normal soil (sandy/acidic). Note that I did not put special garden soil during planting.

Evenings find the hygrangea (flowers, leaves et al) wilted. The root system (from the pot) section of the soil seems dried out. The surrounding soil seems fairly moist.

Why this dry-wet soil behavior? Are the different soil types somehow not mixing well? Should I re-plant the plant using "garden" soil?

Thanks
