bombshell hydrangea

Hi, I have been very interested in the

"Bombshell" Hydrangea. The tag states that it is zone 3 or 4, and is extremely cold hardy, but the temperatures are listed down to -4F and =20C. Does anyone know if these are really hardy in Zone 4 and will bloom next year?

It is a paniculata introduction from Ball Horticulture. They claim it is good to -30F:

Other online nursery vendors either repeated that information or gave estimate to either hardy to Zone 3 or hardy to Zone 4. For example, Better Home and Gardens said Z4:

It is quite new so not much information is available from consumers who have tried them. But paniculatas in general do well in Zone 4. If you order by mail, be prepared to wait for shipping until either after summer temperatures recede or until Spring 2012 if they sold out.

Thanks for your reply. I did buy a couple of them and they did make it through the winter, although it was a very mild one here in Iowa this year. We'll see how well they do this summer!

Too many duds to mention. There were several 'deads' probably due to the winter from hell. Sadly neither of my 2 Clematis near the deck survived. Lost a beautiful brunnera and a really nice penstemon. But what's confusing me this year is the lack of bloom on corydalis lutea. That thing usually blooms non stop all summer. I have lush full plants with not a single flower! What's up with that? Surprised to read the comments about the ninebarks. I have Coppertina and Centreglow. Both are doing great. I didn't find them slow to establish. I moved the centreglow this spring. I hope I haven't jinxed it now. SCG, don't give up on coleus. I don't think this was a good year for them. Also I know from past experience that they can't handle cold and wet at all. You may have got them into the ground too early. Mine are disappointing me this year.

Last year a lot of people complained about Bombshell not blooming. I recall having to call Bally Hort who suggested doing no pruning of any type whatsoever. Still, people complained. Try doing searches in the forum for the word "bombshell" or the words bombshell problem to see what posts you find. I am not familiar with SugarPuff but its claim to fame is a compact size for a paniculata.

I just remember that when I planted my 'Limelights' way back when, the tag said that they would mature to a height of 6 feet. They have probably gotten to be almost double that height at their tallest. This year with heavy pruning in early spring and a secondary pruning later in the season, I've managed to reduce the height to about 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall...but this is too much work. I'd rather have a shrub that fits the space better without so much maintenance. My experience with 'Limelight' is why I wonder if Bombshell really stays around 3 feet....or if it too will surpass its advertised height.

Buttercupia, how are the Bombshell hydrangeas doing so far? My Lowe's has some, at a pretty steep price, but I am looking for something in their height range to replace this spirea hedge that has been bothering me for almost ten years now. It has to go, and I consider to replace it with a low hedge of Bombshell or Little Lime hydrangeas. Any feedback on how thye look, and what height they have for you would be appreciated.

Just chiming in that I am IN LOVE with Little Lime. I have 3 and plan on buying many more. They have so many blooms despite 2 of them being very very young plants. Everyone that sees them asks me what they are. Simply stunning.
I haven't seen bombshell yet and I'm interested in that too but I'm not sure if it could be any better than Little Lime.
