Iris Bed Needs Your Help

Hi Iris Fans,

I need your advice if you're willing to share with me.

In my new to me home (as of April '05) I've a bed of iris both purple & yellow which have likely been there for at least 10 years - probably longer. This bed (and much else) is completely embedded with crab type grass. They are now poking thru the *grass mat* and I'm wondering what to do to either remove the grass or dig them & replant.

Are irises a bulb? Could I treat them kind of like daffodils -- dig them (the bulbs after the foliage has died back) up in the late fall and replant in a prepared bed? Is this a hopeless cause & I should just replace or forget them? At the price of plants now I'd like to save all that I can.

Any help you can offer is much appreciated.
