"Thanks for the link but I won't be ordering from Mr Smith. My money goes to the Stamiles. They are generous and nice to work with and their plants look more like their photos, sometimes even better. Dot" I'll have to '2nd' this posting. Every Smith I got was very sparsely rooted.. and then the Wedding Gown fiasco. The Wedding Gown pic shown on the Smith site isn't anything like what I saw here.. which had a gold edge and isn't an appealing flower at all...wasn't even white. I believe most anyone whose reviewed many daylily pics online would question that pic representing Wedding Gown.. at least the colors don't seem correct to me. But that net pic clearly shows a lack of a heavy gold edge.. what one can see of it is WHITE as the petal color. And this is NOT the case per photos posted here and what I saw here. I buy very few southern intros.. then usually for some specific feature or hybridizing goal. But in the future I'll avoid buying any Smith daylily intros.. relying on garden pics of said plants to judge their merits. No more Smith's here. No more photoshop roulette for me.

I have his 2007 intros of Diamond Girl, Tropical Jewel and Mississippi Man. Bought them on the Lily Auction. They sent me Big Yellow Taxi as a bonus but I don't know what year it was, only that its a Trimmer. I am not going to be in the market for any more of those Florida bred ones until I see how the Florida bred ones I have do for me. Right now I have newer Frank Smith and Ledgewoods as well as Trimmers (all from the LA) so time will tell. Some things that dissapoint me is when I read a description of a Florida daylily and it had 20 or less buds. You know when you move that plant north that the budcount is going to go way down. So I wish they all had 40 budcounts so that even moved north, there would still be lots of flowers.

This is davies in Canon City. I think I used to post on here as 'shudavies', but GardenWeb says "never heard of ya!", so I re-joined as davies-cc. I took a while off to get divorced in 2007 :-( but now I'm back and willing to serve as the Rocky Mountain Curmudgeon, if that's OK with everyone else. I am particularly glad to see david52 is still prowling around on this blog, and Skybird I also remember your irrationally sunny disposition. So you're a flight attendant? Man, the airline industry has taken its share of hits in this milennium, no? Canon City is zone 6; our average winter temps are the warmest in Colorado I think, but we have greater extremes than Grand Junction or the lower Four Corners area. The climate is called high elevation desert, with an average of 12" or so of precip. a year. Zone 6 Tree of the Decade is most definitely the famous Chocolate Mimosa (Albezia julibrisson darkafolia). Got mine for $79.99 locally and it's growing great, very attractive albeit only through one winter thus far. I also finally found a cool bamboo that withstands all the sun and aridity, Phylostachys 'Decora'. It stayed green all winter and put up 7 new shoots this year. Didn't spread though, but I've seen a couple two foot runners along the surface this year so next year I think it's going to spread out some. So as you might have guessed, I'm a little bit of a zone stretcher, trying to grow some subtropical stuff that will survive here. I've got a number of (arborescent) trunk forming yuccas, and many dead-and-disposed-of plants to show for my efforts thus far. Lately I am starting a Japanese garden, although I must confess I'm not totally sure what one is yet. But I'm working on some foundation plants for enclosure, and my budget and my back are keeping me from acting too hastily altogether, so it might turn out to be presentable someday. I use the ant moats with plain water on all of my hummer feeders. I do have to check them for water though b/c the chicadees and goldfinches love to drink the water from them. I have bought 5 more feeders to add to my supply. They are the little 97 cent ones at Wally World. They are perfect for those who don't have hords of hummers at any one time. They only hold about 4 or 5 ounces and you do have to fill them all the way to the top or they will drip but my hummers (and chckadees) drain them daily so their is no nectar waste. I also have 3 of the First Nature feeders from Wally World which I love b/c they are so easy to clean. I only put 6 ounces of nectar in those even though I think they hold 12 or 18 ounces. I do need to start buying and storing sugar now so that I have a supply ready and waiting. I will be watching the wind and weather patterns and if we get an early warm up with lots of southerly head winds I may put my first feeder up a bit earlier than usual but the middle of April has worked out well in the past. As soon as I see reports in northwest PA I know they are getting close. One of my daughters live in Hamburg and she sees them sooner than I do. She is very close to their migration path so when she notifies me that hers have returned I know they are close at hand. Penny

Regarding accuracy of colors, there are so many variables here. Airbrushing, sun, your computer monitor, 'photoshopping,' your soil and culture etc. But, of the large color catalogs, I have found over the years that the Schreiner catalog has been the most accurate in showing the true color of an iris.

I would apply 'the warning label' to all catalogs and monitors as well as what you are viewing may not be the way the plant blooms in your yard.

I totally agree Walter.

So strange Scheiner's printed catalog is good but their website colors are off.
I notice Snowpeak has some new good photos.

MidAmerica now has 2008 catalog on line for download only. Click on download catalog tab at top of page. Paper catalog to be mailed in about 10 days. New catalog format!

Foggy Morning grows like a weed here. A friend just came back from the National. Said they took some photos of my iris. They ask about Mister Bigun. The garden person said it hade been stolen. This was at least better than miss marking which has happened. Or returning in late October.
M B grew to 49" in Calfornia and 45" here.
