Comments (16)FWIW - no matter how permanent the lead or ink is on a label, it won't mean squat if the tag itself is not securely fastened to the plant. Last year, I did a walk-around of the yard just before leaving for a week's vacation. During the night, several benches of cymbidiums and laelias had blown over - many of the plants out of their pots and labels scattered all over. All I could do was quickly gather them up, collect the tags and put the whole mess into milk crates so they would not blow over again while we were gone. I now have many NOID's and am in the process of attaching all my labels to each plant....See MoreMetal ID tags
Comments (6)Interesting point Henry, I totally overlooked that. While many could have deteriorated away it would be interesting to know as we have found much older, and somewhat similar, items in the ground. With the owners permission *chuckle* I dug around both roses at the house this post was intended for and got nothing but a bunch of stabs from thorns...these bushes should be classified as weapons! The smell from these bushes, which have not been in bloom for 2 - 4 months, is amazing. Can't wait till late winter to get some cuttings. Thanks for the info folks....See MoreMetal Tags
Comments (33)Rather than use a stake with a tag attached, I ended up using black plastic "gutter guard" screening. I make a circle around the base of the rose using UV cable ties to close the loop. I then attach the label to the cutter guard. The picture below may help make it clear. https://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#slideshow/5070748980103566482 I feel that this worked better than a stake as I had the same problem that seil had: "My problem with tags that stick in the soil and not tied to the rose is that they seem to disappear on me." I suspect that deer or other "critters" dislodged the stakes. Here is a link that might be useful: picture of use of cutter guard...See MoreAluminium Plant Tags
Comments (16)I started out doing something similar, but I ended up spending more time writing than planting...ugh! I now use software called Plant Tag N Track and my laser printer, print on waterproof sheets of pot sticks, hang tags, and even bench signs. It also keeps all the info I put in so it's ready for the next time I propagate plants. Cheap, too! $69 bucks. Oh, and the best part for me was the training VIDEOS...yep, no reading a freakin manual.
