Problem with PeeGee

I have a well-established (at least 10 yr old) PeeGee that is having a problem this year. She's fully leafed out but now the end of each branch has leaves that are turning brown and eventually falling off. I don't see signs of any insects?? I've sprayed with insecticidal soap--not sure what else to do. Should I clip those ends off to encourage new growth? Seems to have affected only one side of the tree so far. We lost a snowball bush last year to the viburnum leaf beetles and I don't want to lose another tree. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, ajfan. Winter damage could cause browning, especially if it is throughout the shrub and near the ends, which are always more sensitive to the cold. However, I would expect this to become an issue earlier in the growing season. Since you are in Z4, the timing may be ok for your zone. In case it is not, also monitor the soil moisture. Due to lack of moisture in the summer months, the leaves can turn brown from the edges inwards. Also, your PG may have attained a size where it needs more water than in prior years. Or it may need water more often.

Insects & other pests would normally damage or "skeletonize" leaves and you would have noticed this before the leaves browned out so I am not sure this is "the" problem..

Just to be on the safe side, I would also do a soil pH test using soil pH tes kits sold in plant nurseries, watch out for salt burn and do a formal soil test if you have not done one ever or not in the last 5 years or so.

Make sure you do not overwater or fertilize in response to this problem. Too much of them now can complicate analysis of the problem or cause other problems.

Tree form hydrangeas usually have lower branches cut off in order to maintain the tree shape. Branches that are allowed to grow under the main canopy may not get enough sunlight and will look lanky and-or produce weak blooms. For that reason, I would prune these branches if they start to develop. The bottom part of the canopy/umbrella also has similar problems. The leaves that grow on the top of the canopy prevent sunlight from reaching the bottom of the canopy and make the branches/flowers there "poor". You could prune from the bottom of the canopy upwards -towards the top of the canopy- to create holes where sunlight can penetrate. But you need to be way careful of falling down. I do not think anyone has the equipment to prune the top area of the canopy from any other angle than from below. A big pain, is it not?

Not usually. When it starts in the summer months, it is the dry weather causing the problem unless one is overwatering or getting leaves wet for long periods. Fungal infections will require the often presence of moisture and that is just what many of us are looking from the skies! Hee hee hee! btw, the leaves will not recover of course but the problem should stop. If unsure of when to water, insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 4" and water if it feels dry or almost dry. Do not count the mulch on those 4" by the way.

The PeeGee in particular is a pretty common plant so perhaps you could look for one growing nearby and ask the owners if you could take cuttings? Keep in mind that not all cuttings take (generally it is less than a 30% success rate for most plants), so multiple cuttings would be in order. And it is also important to know that a PeeGee tree is simply trained that way and doesn't grow that way naturally - this is typically why they are quite expensive when buying online or even in a garden center. It takes a good number of years to train them into a tree form size that is big enough to sell. I'm sorry you were "taken" by your internet experience:-( In the future, you might want to check with the Garden Watchdog to make sure mail order or online vendors are reputable and have good follow-through before ordering.

shazam, thanks! I did consider a smaller lilac too, but then don't they need full sun to bloom well? In terms of lilacs, how do you like the Bloomerang lilacs that rebloom? Mine in the backyard is finally doing OK, after 3-4 years but the blooms tend to be smaller and not as dramatic as the Korean lilacs... I am wondering if this is a common experience? In terms of evergreens, I do have a few there, like Calgary Carpet Junipers, a golden juniper, as well as a Weeping Larch, and now a Dwarf Weeping Norway Spruce. I also wondered about putting some evergreens there too, but what would do well and look good there with part sun? Prairie_northrose, I went to Lowe's today and got a couple of those 2 gallon Fire Light Hydrangeas today! The thing was, even though they were very healthy looking, they were quite small plants. On the other hand, the Phantom Hydrangeas that I found from Costco were pretty big already, even though they were in 2 gallon pots too. I think that Phantom Hydrangeas probably are just much more vigorous..... hmm.... maybe I should just return those Fire Lights???
