gmom, been there. We've had one in the house a few times. We've been lucky enough to get them out while they were still alive. I'll never forget sitting here watching tv late at night and hearing a crunching by the at food. I looked over to see which cat it was, and it was a chipmunk. Poor thing was scared to death, but on AM I locked up the cats and left the back door open and he scampered out. We have a hav-a-heart trap just to trap the ones in our house if it happens again. My cats sit by the fence and watch the chipmunks on the other side. My neighbor wants to borrow my cats to catch them, but their fence is not cat-get-out-proof.

I can say with 99 percent certainty (OK, 95 percent) that it's your chipmunk friend. Mole holes aren't that big, and 30 feet is just about right for the back door of a munk hole. Your options are limited, based on your wife's love of the munk. But remember that munks don't just tunnel into gardens and eat bulbs, they tunnel against foundations, which weakens the structure due to water damage, and they also chew through wiring. I just bought a spray called Neptunes Harvest Hot Pepper Wax Insect Repellent because something ate all the leaves off the bush beans, etc. Plus I have an apple tree with a ton of apples that I would like to get some apples from this year. The squirrels and deer work together in eating most of them. The squirrels will chew and cut the apples' stems and the apples drop on the ground. The reviews said this spray and pepper sprays in general were good to repel squirrels. The wax helps it adhere to the fruit and leaves. I haven't tried it yet but the reviews were good. We trapped and released 5 groundhogs last year to a location miles away, but we still have a problem this year. My husband wants to shoot them. We're rural so it's safe. I've been hesitant to do that for years, but I've had enough. A couple of the larger ones, and I do mean large, were vicious when my husband was handling the cages last year. I talked to wild life professionals who will trap and remove them, but by law they have to kill them. The fee wasn't cheap either, so I guess if my husband wants to do the job for nothing I'll let him go for it. My neighbor has horses and the GH burrows are dangerous and can trip a horse. They're nasty buggers.My husband scattered some granular stuff I picked up at Lowes, but it didn't do much good. Not sure if my husband put enough around the vegetable beds. Coyote urine might work . You'd have to get that and the hot pepper wax over the internet or at a good farm supply store. I got my wax from Amazon.

Google chipper dipper. When I get a chipmunk problem, I set the trap over and over until I get no chipmunks. I will typically get 3-4 in the first few hours. They still come back every year, so don't worry that you are killing off the population. I don't want chipmunks nibling on my vegetables. They are a rodent, and they are a pest to both vegetables, and digging holes under porch/house foundations. Think cute rat. I use old grilling tongs to throw them into the woods.
