Dirr's Recommendations?

I followed Dirr's book and bought Ami Pasquer, Generale Vicomtesse de Vibraye, and 2 new Preziosa-I already own Nikko Blue, Endless Summer, Merritt's Supreme, Glowing Embers, Kuhnert, Pia, Beni Gaku, Preziosa and some others that I've lost tags, etc. Well, my Nikko, Preziosa, Beni & an unknown lacecap are all doing fantastic this year(loaded with big healthy blooms and nice green foliage), as are many others, but as usual my 3 year old Endless Summer, which is about 2 feet high and wide, has only one bud(plus it's in a prime spot, AM sun, PM shade). Ami & Generale are still tiny and all old wood died this winter so only new growth, which I assume will give me NO flowers this year. These two are in prime spots, too. So, this being said, I think I'm going to have to just make babies of MY best ones and plant all my "mistakes" in my woodland garden(not even my property!) where they can be forever green and be an occasional meal for the deer. I guess I just have such frustration when I hear about Endless Summer being so great and I'm lucky to get 2-3 flowers per year! At least I have my old reliables! On another note, I planted a cheap Wal-Mart "assorted hydrangea" in a large pot this past fall and over wintered it in my unheated garage, and it is loaded with beautiful pinkish-red 4-5" blooms! This was my first time trying a "pot" hydrangea in over 12 years of growing them outside-more rewarding, but I wish it would bloom in the ground!

I've had my endless summer for about 3 years too. I heard all the hype about how wonderful it was, but it didnt do anything for me. It was slow to grow, not one bloom since I bought it- needless to say, I was unimpressed. BUT this year, it was my first to bloom and I have about 14 blooms on it. Mine is probably in the least favorable spot- it gets shade until about 2 then full sun. (I put it in that spot thinking my birch will one day be big enough to shade it- maybe next year) I Did cover it this year- I may have covered it the first year dont really remember. My preziosa has done well every year and so have my Nikkos and harlequinn. I guess what I'm saying is dont give up on the endless summer yet. The others you mentioned I have always wanted but lack the space at the moment- the trees in my yard need to start growing so I have less sun darn it!

You can't have deer and unprotected hydrangea. Unless you have an at-least-8-feet-high fence around them, the deer will find and eat them. that's why you aren't getting flowers from Endless Summer. If you don't spray deer repellent after a rain, they will find them. that's why I no longer grow hydrangea. I'm amazed that people don't understand how much deer love them and how pernicious deer really are. I've worked in horticulture for 10 years, and when people ask why their perfectly sited and fed roses and hydrangeas don't bloom I say "DEER!" Just because you don't see them near your shrubs doesn't mean they aren't browsing (yes I know that's a double negative).

lt looks like just the experts I'm seeking! I'm making up my plant list for spring and was planning on putting some witchhazel in the bush I am planning at the back of my property. What I'm not sure is which would be the best variety as they are not common around here. 1) it will be set back quite a bit from my house (although I will see it out the windows no problem) so "bright" colour I think would be important. Which have the best show from afar? (Would the reds show up?) 2) Could you recommend a combination of 2-3 that would extend my bloom time? 3) Since they bloom so early do you set them back in the landscape? Thanks all. I've read the info in the books and seen the small pictures but it just doesn't give me a feel for what it would look like in the landscape. Sharon

That TS you bought looks like a rooted cutting with about 1.5 seasons' growth on it. I'm not slamming it or anything, just observing. It can be fun watching things grow from a smaller size, especially if you've found the right conditions for it. It's likely the ones available in the next few years will be bigger (and get slightly cheaper) because it takes time to grow them larger and increase quantities, especially with the widespread droughts out there. Example: mac. Pistachio will likely not be available from F&E this year due to growing conditions.

Hello, Wendy. I have not seen recommended amounts of aluminum specified in parts per million. That is because the actual process of turning hydrangeas blue is far more complicated and requires monitoring additional things. For example, PH Levels above 6 to 6.2 will inhibit absorption of aluminum regardless of how much aluminum your soil has. So you could have large amounts of aluminum and a plant in very alkaline soil would have a low aluminum absorption rate. Phosphorus in large amounts also makes it difficult to absorb aluminum, which is why people who want to get pink hydrangeas also apply triple superphosphate to maintain the color. If you want blues then you want to minimize phosphorus. Oh, you also want to maximize pottasium levels. Some of the aluminum recommendations that I have seen for commercial hydrangea wholesellers ignore aluminum measurements of ppm and instead suggest adding 8oz of a drench to a 6" pot every two weeks. Of course, the drench should be added to soil that is already moist and I stress that it is for commercial use. The drench is composed of 1lb of aluminum sulfate in 10g of water. It is used with 35% sulphuric acid source to keep the soil Ph at 5.8 and a low phosphorus and high pottasium fertilizer. Wow... nobody said life was simple, hu? Ha! Luis

Most likely Japanese Maples, J.D. Vertrees (Second Edition, revised by Peter Gregory), published by Timber Press. This is considered the "bible" for Japanese maple enthusiasts. Another great reference (and one I value even a bit more than Vertrees) is Maples for Gardens, by the van Gelderen brothers.

First, Dirr doesn't know it all. His trials haven't been extensive enough or done in enoug microclimates to be conclusive. I believe the caretaker of Wayside Garden Center in Macedon NY has done some good work - check out hydrangeasinthenorth.com for the basics and if you would like to try his book.

Vicomtesse might bloom from the crown.

Deer definitely suck. They will literally come up behind you after you've finished a gardening session and eat your work. Turkeys aren't much better - one came up when my back was turned and was eating grass seed I had just done patch work with!

Concerning hardiness, I'm often compelled to use the "burial mound" technique of digging up all hydrangeas with a 7-gallon or less sized root ball and trash bagging the ball, and then piling them under my deck in a mound with a tarp over them until spring. This would save all the stems, minus a few buds that might get knocked off.
