All Summer's Beauty...how to grow in zone 5?

Hi,

I bought 2 All Summer Beauty "starts" this spring. I potted them up in larger pots when they arrived. One has no buds but looks healthy, but not doing much. The other one has about 4 flowers on it. Some are pink around the edge, white in the middle, some solid pink. They all look healthy.

I was going to grow them in containers for the summer, since they were only about $4. a piece. The information said they were hardy in zone 5. I always take that with a grain of salt. So now I am not sure whether to try to plant them in the yard and leave them there over the winter. Whether to prune off the flowers, will I get more buds? I thought they were supposed to have repeat bloom. Should I winter protect them? Also they are pink right now, but my soil ph is 6.4, I would think they would turn blue, correct?

When I got my pieces, I just potted them up in cactus mix/perlite/chicken grit. I water a little more often than my desert cacti, but I don't do anything special, otherwise.

Have you kept tomatoes all summer in zone 10?

In theory, tomato plants are perenials and will live several years. All you need is perfect weather, no bugs, no diseases and a little luck. I have had cuttings that lived thru the summer. They usually don't do much until the weather starts to change but then they take off. If you cut it back below the lowest branch, your new growth would probably come out at ground level so mounding dirt around it might not be a good idea. Also, the new growth would probably start immediately otherwise the roots will die.

I'm a zone up from you (or is it down?) I'm in zone 4. The full shade plants that look good for me all summer are celadine poppies, lamiastrum Herman's Pride, christmas and Japanese painted ferns. Lamium can get ratty, but if I cut it down, it fills right in. Same with sweet woodruff. Blue lobelia, turtlehead, and toad lily bloom late summer and can hide some of the shaggy foliage of others. I'd guess that the shade isn't the problem with the hosta size, but lack of moisture (or they may just be hostas that don't get very big).
