A wierd hydranga story!

I have been trying to grow nikko blues for years in my yard.

I have great soil, very rich, loaded with worms and compost, and it stays evenly moist. In fact everything I grow does well....Except for these!

BUT, I could never get these stupid things to flower for me. Every year the old growth would die back after winter, and all I would get is leaves..For ten years...

My neighbors,an ederly couple told me they would love to have them after I told them I was going to toss them due to no poductivity in blooms.

Well they never spend a day out there in their yard. Their yard is full of weeds, very arid, hard as a rock, and never tended too. They didn't want to see them wasted.

So, I stuck them in their yard two years ago, and to this day, ALL THEY DO IS FLOWER!! What is up with this picture?

I watch them grow and flower profusely...One of the bushes now has over 30 buds on it and has gotten 3 feet wide. That thing is never fed. Never watered in their bone dry soil, and sits in the full sun ALL day...It is totally ignored, except when I walk by them to gauk at how well they are doing along my driveway in their yard.

I don't get it. lol

They are probably getting more sun than they had in your yard ....

That makes me wonder as well. I've had similar things happen with a few plants, give them to someone who doesn't do a thing to them and they do wonderful things. I just bought a couple "Endless Summer" and am going back and forth as to where to put them. I did post about it and received a suggestion which I'm going to try. If they do well great and if not I'll move them. In a way this is like painting, if you don't like the color paint over it and the same goes for flower gardening, if the plant doesn't do well in one area move it and see what happens.

The verdict is in!!! Got my seeds today (Friday)..In the first class envelope was another piece of an envelop taped together with masking tape and written on the outside..25+ streaked seeds. I counted approximately 30 plantable with a whole lot of chaff and other underdevelope seed parts in the mix. I was kinda looking for those little zip-lock craft type baggie to have the seeds in, but hey for a new comer it's a beginning. He's listing now a lot of the more common hosta varieties, he says he will list some of his streakers later in the season. I'm not much of a seed person would I order again, I doubt it, this was just a litte curiosity bid for a newcomer. Hope all you others get your seeds today. John

I've heard the stories about the cow bird monitoring the nests where she has laid eggs, and I don't believe it really happens. Cowbirds used to follow the buffalo herds and could not stick around to raise their young. So they would lay their eggs in the nests of others and then might stick around or might move on, based on what the buffalo did. Yellow Warblers will build a nest on top of their original nest if a cowbird laid an egg in it. Naturalists have seen up to 10 yellow warbler nests built one on top of the other to avoid incubating the cowbird eggs that were laid in each additional nest. No harm was done to any of the warblers eggs and no retaliation was reported. Many birds naturally recognize the foreign egg and remove it from the nest, without any reprisal.

I like the beautiful camouflage pattern, like a hand made carpet. There's a beauty inside. Fantastic how these animals can completely transform their bodies from one shape to another. And how can their tiny minds remember migration routes? They have to have something to protect their soft bodies while they're young so they have whatever little defense they are born with. Some only have luck and camouflage but these have scent. Swallowtails are magnificent animals.

Lol.....Weird ha?

I ended up replacing my nikko blue with endless summer ones. Now these display such beauty for me planted in the same spots those nikkos were in.....

My guess would be that, somehow, the plants are a bit more protected. The flower buds survive. OR, that the plants, being grown with neglect, are somehow more hardy...thus more top growth survives, and more flowers. Sometimes, rich soil is not such a good thing.
