Abiqua Drinking Gourd? Or not? (pics)

Okay, I am stumped. I've read through dozens of previous posts about Abiqua Drinking Gourd and Love Pat, and now I think I might have one of them (new house), but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Deeply cupped, blue-gray, some greenish, silvery backs to the leaves, very large. Clickable thumbnail photos below...

Hosta to the left is Pandora's Box, to the right is June.

This looks like Love Pat to me. What a beauty!

I have both - ADG is greener of the two, and its leaves are more consistently cupped.

I'm with you. If I didn't have mine tagged I wouldn't know which is which. Maybe if they were closer to each other I could tell the suttle differences.

I don't know about mine. I think it may be a dud or not ADG at all, because though it cups a little, it doesn't cup nearly as much as it ought to. I got it back in 2007 and it has been a slow grower, but it only slightly cups for me, some leaves. It does have a nice blue color, which if it weren't for the flowers being different, I would think it to be Deep Blue Sea instead. I've seen young ADGs at nurseries with better cupping than mine. Congratulations, MrGary.....you've done an outstanding job. I am saving your post to my clippings so I can go back to it easily for reference. I think the one you cannot remember might be Alex Summers. It sure looks like mine. I won't picture it here, but mine is about the same age as yours....I'm just a sophomore with hosta myself, so our plants are "of an age." I'm pleased to see you are growing Banyai's Dancing Girl. It looks almost like Blue Cadet, and it is a very inexpensive choice to mass plant. Van Wade suggests it as an edger if you ever need such a feature. I edge with liriope here in zone 9a. But I am making a collection of the smaller blue hosta such as BC and BDGirl since I don't like being redundant and I like variety. Things such as Drummer Boy, Dear Hearts, Happy Hearts, Cheatin Heart (golden), Golden Tiara, Grand Tiara, Twist of Lime, Lemon Lime, Feather Boa....well, I fibbed, I just like the smaller mounding hosta blue or gold or green! Thanks for treating us to a beautiful garden.

Just got this hosta this year. I am hoping it grows and looks as good as the ones in this thread. Jo, the one that I have already shows corrugation and cupping. Your first one doesn't look like it has any of either. If I had to guess, I'd say your second one looks more like ADG. But don't take my word for it!

I cannot take credit for taking individual hosta photos at the same time every year. Hank Zumach did it (he took his in June when they were at their peak in his neck of the woods) years ago and that is what inspired me, and Papou, and many others. It doesn't always happen here in California that first week in May, but I aim for just taking photos one day during that month. I don't necessarily go for "beauty shots", just have the featured hosta in the center of the photo to document them. If one looks spectacular (to me) during the year I take a "beauty shot" then. Cant comment on the type...but that is a very pretty little setting it is in. It is a gorgeous plant whatever it is! LOL

I took a look at my Abiqua Drinking Gourd, Love Pat, and Big Daddy hostas and I would say yours is a toss up between Love Pat and Big Daddy. Love Pat tends to be a litle more powdery blue but then again if this one is in a little bit of sun that could account for the loss of some of the wax.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the delay...caught a spring cold. Go figure.

I went ahead and labeled it Love Pat. After reading all your thoughts (and kind compliments--thank you!!!), I searched through the Hosta Library and several online nursery catalogs, and Love Pat seems most likely.

And yes, ctopher, it does get about three hours of direct sun a day; it's in bright shade the rest of the time.

Thanks again! I'm one of those who likes to catalog and name everything (research librarian when not digging in the dirt), and sometimes I wonder why I picked hostas...definitely the wrong plant hobby for enjoying certainty. ;-)
