Transplanted ES in May, will it flower?

My hubby decided to transplant my two ES and my BB without consulting me and now I am worried that they won't bloom this year. He says that he took as much dirt as he could with the ES which had been planted three years ago. My BB aparently lost a lot of dirt in the move. After all the work I put in winter protecting them I'm going to be really upset if they don't flower. Im in zone 6 and we have had two days of constant rain and 50 degrees weather which i am hoping will help them out a bit. I watered them with sugar water to hopefully help them with the shock. Will they be ok?

Hi melaroma ~ I've done some moving in Spring w/ success & blooms ~ even moved a more delicate (Serrata) w/ good guidance from here & MyM bloomed the very following month! I'm sure not guaranteed but if much of the root balls were intact you should not have problems. I moved 2 of my regular ES 3 times in 1 season looking for an ideal site (before I knew anything worth much) both did fine.
I did use cottonseed mulch w/ the back fill soil & watered w/ solution of quick-start ~ DK if those steps helped.

Oh that is a relief to hear. Hubby did add some really good compost in with the existing soil so I hope that helps. Also during lunch I tried looking for any buds and the ones I founds are so tiny that I almost missed them so hopefully it was done early enough. Guess hubby won't be sleeping in the dog house tonight ;)

5 years in a pot is too long. The roots will be quite root bound. You could leave it 4 years if you change the ingredients a little. Chipped coconut husk at 6MM size lasts longer than pine bark. About 5 years versus 2-3 for pine bark. Also perlite has a life of about 5 years. It turns to pudding after that. The 5-1-1- mix is great for indoor plants, but university studies show that pine bark dries fast, and in your environment may not be good. Although fruit trees require fast draining soil. Still a 3-1-1 or a 4-1-1 might be better. You don't want to over do the fertilizer Osmocote is fine. Trees with too much nitrogen produce less, and smaller fruit. Also near harvest do not over water. Keep it on the dry side and your fruit will have a higher brix. That is a awesome genetic dwarf tree btw. They like to be in pots and you can put it in the ground, but you don't have to. Welcome to the forum, deacondog! Somehow it does help to find we're all in the same boat, doesn't it? Many on various forums reporting a variety of well-established plants' top growth killed to the ground even in zones 8 & 9. I'm with SouthCountryGuy, too - don't count 'em out yet. If you give up on the old stems (and for reasons already mentioned, this may be wise at an appropriate time), the root mass still likely to produce new growth in its own good time. Over the years, found many plants left for goners regrew over a year later. (Clematis are infamous for this.) Though I'd grown hydrangeas in other gardens (when they were considered low-maintenance shrubs), overlooked adding them here till last year when the new rebloomers caught my attention. Experimenting, brought in a few mopheads, potted them up, half-plunged the pots in a mound of soil covered with oak leaves last Fall & forgot about them - until the ice & snow storms became monotonous. At that point, imposssible to pry the pots from the frozen ground. If I'd only known what the weather had in mind, they could have safely spent the harsh season in the garage or more thoroughly protected - our common lament. After the Spring freezes, the pots were unearthed & set atop the ground. Only Leuchtfeuer (Firelight, Beacon Light, Lighthouse) has shown any growth - halfhearted, but much appreciated. Like hokierusty in Williamsburg, the temp didn't dip below 0 here, but the extended cold did more damage than short lows below that in previous years. In this on-again, off-again slow motion Spring - almost Summer! - the soil here still hasn't warmed consistently. Well-mulched soil has barely warmed at all. Hydrangeas sited in part shade likely still haven't gotten the grow message in their cooler morning sun spots. Rose growers are finding that pulling mulch away from the root zone for stunted plants has worked to warm the soil & stimulate growth. Tried this for other woody perennials with success this year - latest they've ever emerged by a month at minimum. The principle should apply to planted hydrangeas in conditions like mine, as well, shouldn't it? For the potted hydrangeas, plan to move them to the blacktop driveway where they'll receive the heat sink effect from morning sun (still with afternoon shade) to see if additionally warming their soil will help awaken them.

You can deahead the spent flowers at any time. You will get more when the temperatures go down. I think ES, like most roses, will be taking a break during the worst of summer.

This year i have two each of 8 varieties. I picked the flowers off half of them. so far there is no noticeable difference in plant growth (both are thriving) and a few of those original flowers set fruit and are sizing up nicely. Others seem to have aborted. Since it doesn't seem to have affected their initial growth I will probably leave the flowers on in coming years, but I may do the same thing next year as a second test. The varieties I planted are below. All had flowers or buds when I transplanted them on May 3rd. Cherry Roma (seemed to abort many of the early flowers, but there are a few tiny fruit). Park's Whopper (seemed to get fruit from all (most?) early flowers and is sizing up nicely), Black Krim (some fruit) German Pink (No fruit yet) Marianna's Peace (no fruit yet) Kosovo (some fruit and sizing up very nicely. this one might be my surprise winner for early toms) Opalka (no fruit yet) Italian Heirloom (most flowers seem to have aborted but I have one tomato) Those that I pinched the flowers off have no fruit but have lots of new flower/bud trusses (trusses?) so, even though the growth seems to be similar, perhaps they will set more fruit later in the season. But, I really haven't paid close attention to which ones have the most flowers. I suppose time will tell. -jon ps. i really appreciate all of the regular responders on this forum. Oh, still put him in the dog house. I would! =D Seriously, I don't mess around with his lawn*, he best stay away from my flowers. You may get lucky if your buds already started forming (even if you can't see them yet). Water, water, water this season.

I transplanted an ES 3 weeks ago that was just breaking dormancy. I'm not expecting flowers this year, but if I get them I'll be thrilled.

*disclaimer - I don't mess with his lawn unless I'm killing parts of it for more flower beds. lol

Well the lawn is my domain too so I will have to mess with his tomatoes or peppers. I am weird in that I love, yes LOVE, to mow the lawn. I itch for winter to be done not so much so that I can start messing with plants as that I can start mowing. Something about the smell of freshly mowed grass and the entertainment of mowing it in patterns. Love it!

Although the pleasure of enjoying my hydrangeas is another reason!

Hey melaroma - I meant to respond to this promptly as I found a soul sister in * LOVE OF MOWING* ~ just to show you how much ~ eons ago when my boys were in H Sch they accused me of making them look like a pair of *free-loading bums* when they come home & find the greens all cut & edges even trimmed! The neighbor men w/ their JDeere rider mowers hated me & my 16" electric red one!!! As you said the smell of freshly cut grass is heavenly!

However as years went & I reclaimed the boy's soccer kicking grass, my mowing area has gotten smaller but tortuous w/ obstacle course cause I discovered that *dirt-digging* can be fun too!!! LOL

LOL, dirt digging is fun! However I like big open spaces of green as a view so I tend to keep my beds along the hardscape. Boring, I know. I just love standing at one corner of my property and looking at all the freshly moved greenery with neat lines running across it. I did create a new bed at the front yard corner where the driveway meets the sidewalk this year and I am happy with it but I made so that it is super easy to mow around it. Come to think of it that is along side a hardscape, lol. Nevermind.
