Mice in parents' house
Comments (15)I doubt I could find all the holes in their house to plug up with steel wool, but I did find one in my house that I filled with expandable foam, which is also supposed to work. The hole was in my kitchen floor, right by where the outside door opens. We've only had two mice in the past two years, but I suspect that that may be where they got in. I know that mice used to come into my parents house through the attic, and I do not feel competent to seal that up myself. My sister and I agree that we need a professional to do the job, and my sister is willing to pay for it. I do not know what my mother's objection to an exterminator is. I think part of is that she thinks she has the situation under control, but I know that she doesn't. I don't know what De-con is, but I will look into that as well. My mother does not like for money to be spent unnecessarily - by anyone - but I see problems with living with mice - they can be very destructive. My mother keeps her food in safe containers, but she does not keep that much food in the house anyway. Unlike me, she will buy food in cans, and they eat lunch at Wendy's every day because they have a senior citizen special, and that is as much as they can eat. I talked with my sister last night, and she said that I might want to consider staying in a motel while visiting, but I would do that only as a last resort; i.e., if my allergies to the new cat are unbearable. I think I have time to get used to the idea of having mice, although at first my reaction was one of horror. I don't think my mother is averse to having strange people in the house to do work - she just does not want to be disturbed and does not want to admit that there is a problem. Thanks for your suggestions! Lars...See MoreRiddex for mice?
Comments (5)I tried the older ones without success, but this fall I threw 'Horse Apples' under the house and have not seen a bug of ANY kind since. Used to get those disgusting 'water bugs'/tree roaches in the carport & to my horror, sometimes inside! NO MORE! We live in the country & spiders would build huge webs between window & screens -the horse apples put a halt to them too....See MoreMice ate 3 rose bushes! What to do now?
Comments (17)Nothing like rodent patrol. For gophers, just go to Walmart, HD, Lowes, etc, and look for gopher bombs or gopher gassers. They are cheap, but I don't know how effective they are, since badgers take care of our gophers around here, and voles and mice are our worst problems. For mice, d-con is very effective; it's in a yellow box and available everywhere. For voles, we have used a stronger version of d-con which comes in a white plastic bucket. These products are in granule form. Just pour a small amount down the vole hole, and prepare for vole bodies (ick). For mice, follow the directions for placing the little yellow boxes of d-con. This stuff is granular, too, and can be poured into the holes also. I just noticed the voles are back and making a mess of our lawn in one spot. Time for the rodent wars. Keep pets away from the vole holes if you are using these products. Diane...See MoreMice eating corn stalks and peppers?
Comments (6)I had forgotten that I trapped one of these critters last year and was able to snap a few pictures of him before I released him into some woods miles away from my house. After going back and looking at those pictures, I can say with some confidence that it's a mouse, not a vole. I can tell by the pointed snout and the long, body-length tail. Since I'm pretty sure it's mice and not voles doing all this damage to my garden, does anyone have any suggestions for the most effective way to exterminate what seems to be a fairly big infestation? I really don't want to use poison, but I'm open to any and all other suggestions. As I mentioned before, snap traps don't seem to be working because ants just eat or carry away all the bait (I think) before the mice can get to it....See Morejensagtprost
