These are mostly Big Momma seedlings. I let the scapes fall over and let nature take its course.

Yesterday one of my planters was dug up and plants here and there. I tucked them back in muttering unflattering comments about squirrels and watered well thinking that might deter the critters. Awoke this morning to a big pile of soil and plants on the ground. Decided that I would tuck the plants back in and put out the plastic knives. Surprise, there was a mallard duck nest with a bluish egg in the planter! Sorry, squirrels. Disturbed plants got put in another container and duck nest will stay. Thought the mallards were nesting away from our yard this year. This is very late but they are welcome.

I do Ken, and love it. I've downloaded tons of stuff on DNA. I never remember numbers. It is a waste of my gray matter when I've learned where to find them elsewhere. I'm a binary woman=1 or 2 or neither. So I know dna exists as a double helix, meaning two strands wrap around each other. Where they touch is a nexus. There are millions of them and they are supposed to match. It is at each nexus where genetic history is communicated. If just one nexus is mutant and doesn't match the result is a mutated organism. Usually it is insignificant and the mutation regresses, but doesn't really go away. However, during reproduction (particularly when a species has a rapid reproduction cycle, like fish and hostas) it is more likely the mutation becomes stronger and a knew, in our case hosta comes into existence. Since hostas develop completely new leaves each season, this explains why seedlings often revert back to green. Solid green absorbs sun energy better and the plant has no need to retain the variegation. My Guacamole gets a goodly amount of sun and is rather unspectacularly variegated. It looks much like a dark plantaginea with slightly rounded leaves. It rained all day yesterday (Yay!) but only totaled 1/4". Until yesterday I hadn't received 1/10" total for July. Normal is over 4". But it is raining again this morning. I didn't want to lay on wet ground observing hostas. So I still have to put together the information I am developing Idiothe (I am just now making sense of you forum name :o I will tell you another way to tell them apart other than viability (I think).Look at the shape of the base of the leaf where it meets the pets. In what I believe to be cathayana the edge of the leaf conjoins the pet more in the shape of a "V", with straight edges. In Lancifolia it can be described better as a "U", with no notch. Both are oblong rather than lance shaped with the Lancifolia being slightly more so. The length to width ratios are different with the cathayana being narrower. Both have equally acute tips. If you like you can follow this in Shmids work on species hostas. This is a bit lengthy, but are not subjects that can be glanced over and understood. I am trying to make it as easy to understand as possible, and as I am typing I am not looking at notes. I tell folks to mix their own ratio but you can start with 2 parts ammonia to 8 parts water. Look for a reaction to the slug/snail, if none add more until you see/get a reaction. <I have been using ammonia + water for many years and have not lost any plants due to its use.> I have seen no reaction even using straight ammonia as I said it dissipates quickly. When spraying my mixed blend when earthworms are contacted they seem irritated but it doesn't kill them - to me that's a good thing cuz if it did I wouldn't use it. I use rainwater to water my plants so as to not upset the soil bacteria with chlorine. Is chlorine toxic? IF you haven't had a soil test perform professionally by your local college or Agriculture Dept - I would strongly suggest you do. Have you gardened in this area before? What are you using for mulch? Not knowing what part of the world you are in, I am thinking you either have a low Ph or are attracting these critters some other way. Is there anything yeasty in the area? Bread maybe?

Really? I didn't know you could get babies from the scapes. Do you just pin scapes to the ground, kind of like with a shrub branch? (Propagation by layering?)

Thanks guys.

Mary I just let the scapes fall to the ground and let seeds fall on top of the mulch and they sprouted where they fell.

Seedlings are like rescue dogs, they don't have the papers and bloodline, but they can be the best.

As I'm sure you know, Jon, those 'mutts', with their mixed variety of gene pools, are some of the brightest, strongest (healthiest, in general) and long-lived domestic dogs in existence. I totally agree with you. I love dogs (and animals) in general. Having said that, I've always had a special affection for the mixed breeds.

Tim, I would buy one of those Big Momma seedlings. Price, shipping, etc. Really, I would. Just thinking (out loud) ; )

Found in a barn with 5 siblings. Phoenix her mother was starving, but she would not abandon her pups. The only person Phoenix would not growl at was the foster families 11 year old. They have kept Phoenix and the pups are all in new homes. Shasta was out to one home and returned. She has a lot of hunting instincts and would stalk me all the time and I would be scratched and bleeding (Bloody nose one time) She has always loved kids and loves people.

She still gets wild sometimes but never scratches and is the biggest baby you have ever met. Smart, I swear she talks to me, strong, can easily run down a rabbit and is a terrific watchdog as she has extraordinary senses (all dogs do, but she is exceptional).

Jon, Shasta is a beautiful dog and bless you for rescuing her! It breaks my heart to see all of the dogs and cats that are in shelters all because people are not responsible and don't spay or neuter their pets.

I rescued a Siberian Husky from our local shelter and she has turned out to be a great dog and I am so happy that I was able to give her another chance. Everyone should consider adopting instead of shopping for a pet.

I foster dogs for a local rescue and I love doing it but my current foster is a digger and I'm constantly pulling her out of my hosta beds. She will probably be adopted tomorrow. She's a good dog and I'll miss her but I can garden uninterrupted!

Sandy, Shasta dug into a large pile of old logs covered with years of leaves and grass clippings that had turned into a hill of compost. She dug her body almost completely into the hill throwing out logs, simply throwing them out with her paws or grabbing them and pulling them out with her teeth as she attacked the pile. Fine with me after 10-15 minutes of furious digging she is ready for a nap when she comes inside.

Jon, I can imagine what Shasta looked like when she was finished devastating that wood/compost pile! A tired dog makes a happy owner!
