Newbie - planting - how far apart?

Hi - this is only my second season of gardening and my first time planting impatiens in a border next to my path, I don't have a very large gardening area maybe about 6 feet long. I know from last year they grow and expand (I did really well last year with them) so my question is how far apart do I plant them so it will eventually fill in? Thanks

I recommend planting them 12" apart on center (e.g. meassured from the middle of one plant to the middle on the 2nd plant, the spacing should be 1 foot).

You can also plant them upto 18-24" on center, and that will give lower growing and more compact plants later in the season.

I do not recommend planting them too close. Whenever, we have planted them closer than 1 foot (6" or 8" on center) they have become tall, poorly flowering and generally not very attractive.

What you can do, is to plant two rows (one behind the other) staggered (see diagram below). You would need about 11 plants to fill in your 6' run. That gives a very nice look.

Make the distance between the rows 12 x 0.886 = 10.5 inches. That will provide the best possible look for your impatiens.

e.g. between each plant: 12" on center (from middle of one plant to middle of another plant).
between each row: 12 x 0.886 = 10.5" spacing of rows.

Thanks so much for the info. I think I'm going to stick with the single row because the width of my boarder is only about 6-7". I live in a co-op development and the area for gardening isn't very large. But thought impatiens along the pathway coming into the house would look great. Since I'm sick and sit outside when I can I'll really be able to enjoy the beauty. Thanks again.

I am seeing 9-12 inch spacing online. Figured for a fuller look the 9" spacing might be the way to go. If I have success with this...I may plant more in the area next year.

Melissa, I, too, was motivated to plant my new hostas last year TOO close to each other, trying for that "fuller" look; needless to say, I have spent the last 2 weeks moving every single hosta farther apart. It hasn't been 6 months and they were already encroaching upon each other. I moved all the big ones as far back along the fence as possible & managed to give each one at least 1 more foot of clearance. Eventually, these must be dug up & divided, as I have managed to fill up almost every nook in my garden. I will try to post pics so that you have an idea. They say patience is a virtue; it's better to space them apart & wait the 3-5 years it takes them to reach full maturity, than to have to dig them up & move them. My two cents.

How far apart to plant tomatoes ?

I just had a man and his companion leave that want to inspect my tomatoes trellises because he can not manage his tomatoes. The first two trellises I put in were 4' apart with spacing of 32" between plants. I then went to 52" between trellises. Next year I will just plant tomatoes on every other trellis or move me trellises to 60 or 72 inches apart. I plant my tomatoes 30 to 36 inches apart, depending on the plants. Next year that will change also because I need the space for air circulation and for me to get up and down the rows. I hope to get as much production, even with the new spacing, if not, so be it, I get too many tomatoes anyway. Another thing I did last year that I was happy with was plant some plants in late may or early June. The late plants (8 or less, last year only one) will give us more tomatoes than what we need up to frost. I can cut the water off of the old tired plants and start cleaning that part of the garden up. Larry

Over time they will naturally fill in with shoots regardless of the spacing you choose, the question the becomes how long do you want to wait for that to occur. I planted some of mine on cattle panels 2 years ago at 6 ft spacing on cattle panels, (tailing type thornless blackberries), and they are about 1/3 of the way filled in now. I estimated they will be fully filled in within a couple of more years.
