288 cell tray of Impatients -now what?

Someone gifted me with a 288 cell flat of impatient. What do I do next? Too small to go in the ground at this size

, right? I am in Denver. Too early to put out now. They are getting root bound. I am looking for a solution without

having to go out and buy 6 paks etc for the next step if something different can be done.

Can you get them into 6-8 oz cups for a few weeks until you can get them outside?

They really need to get into something bigger.

That would really help build their root system.

You could plant them outside that small after they are hardened off, but they would be much happier in a larger container for a few weeks.

Got any strawberry jars? You know the kind with multi openings for strawberry plants. If so, start putting them in those. It's best done when the plants are little and believe me, they fill those holes and make a beautiful upright display, I do it every year in my shady areas that are too dry to grow anything.

Another favorite of mine is an impatient crate. If you can get a wooden crate with slats at least an inch, more is better, apart, line with garbage bags leaving top open for watering, fill with soil, cut slits in the plastic and insert plants in sides and then plant the top, again, best done while they are young. By the time they fill out you will have a mound of impatients. Plus it's easy to water, I just leave the hose on a slow drip for a few hours, once or twice a week depending on weather. Once you get the soil totally moist all the way through, it will stay that way for a long time.

Make a sack of heavy duty burlap or plastic, fill with dirt, cut slits, plant and hang from a tree. But put in an inch wide pvc pipe drilled with holes in the center for watering first.

Lay a large bag of potting soil on the ground and cut slits in it and plant.

Make an impatient tower. Take a large pvc pipe and drill inch wide holes in it. Take a smaller pipe and drill smaller hole. Put small pipe in center of large pipe and fill with dirt leaving the small pipe empty, that is your watering pipe, you fill it with water to make it drip out into the soil. The tower can be as big as your imagination and other plants can be added for extra interest.

Best idea yet, send about a hundred to me, I still have several strawberry jars and shade planters to fill, lol.

Obrion: onions can be mass planted in a flat filled with a peat-lite mix and separated at planting time, I'd guess 1/4x1/4" spacing would be plenty of room depending on how big you plan on letting them get before it's time to plant. I plant mine in 288 seedling flats, that's 288 individual cells in a tray that fits into a standard flat. For me, those get planted indoors in later Feb. and are ready to plant (tight enough root ball) in early April. Michael

Fuseables by Pan Am seeds

I will follow up with results on Pan Am Fuseables. I might also add that I started a new seed starting regime last year that worked out better than ever for me and will be using this method this year with all my seeds including the fuseables. I used to start my seeds by planting several seeds in a 3 inch pot and then thinning to one strong plant. Last year I tried something different. I planted one seed only in a plug and planted plenty to make up for the ones that won't germinate. They came up and thrived showing after a while a really vigorous root growth. At that point, I then planted the plug and all into a 3 inch pot with good seed starting soil. The results were amazing and the plants shot up so well that I decided to delay seed starting by three weeks this year. I should also mention that I start my plants in a warm sunny area on a heat mat and covered with a clear top. As soon as they individually germinate I remove them from the cover. After a few days they go down in the basement under lights and in a cool environment. This way they grow slowly, thickly and strongly. I harden off my plants for a few weeks outside in the spring - bringing them inside at night if it threatens to be too cold.

jcrowder, I think you may have two issues here (possibly 3 if you got a bad batch of seeds, pretty rare for that to happen though.) I find that when I have low germination, it is usually due to something I have done (or had happen) like planting the seeds too deep. I prepare my tomato, pepper and egg plant seed starting containers and level the top of the moistened medium about a half inch below the lip of the cell, flat, or what ever I am using. Then I put the seeds on the growing medium (never use dirt, a soiless seed starting mix is best) then I sprinkle a very thin layer of the same mix over the seeds. Most seed packet say to cover them 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch deep. I feel that 1/4" is too deep. One seed company's directions say they should be surface sown or covered very lightly. I like the covered lightly version. You are probably right that it is the night time temperatures. I have a new greenhouse and will be starting my seeds about April 1. I plan to start them indoors on my heat mat, move them off the heat when they sprout, then move them to the greenhouse when they are a couple of inches tall. I do have one of the min/max thermometers and plan to monitor the highs and lows in there for the next week or two so that I'll have a good idea on what to expect, such as if I need to add a bit of supplemental heat if we are expecting real cold spell. You can use them for raising plugs but they need potting on pretty quickly. I got some plug plant violas from a nursery and have since then reused the cells for annuals. But they've been potted on after a few weeks. (I grow without heat or lights. If I had them I expect the seedlings would need moving on more quickly.) Plugs on arrival.... 40 plants per module. Plugs potted on 18 September. Starting to pot on further (the ones in front on the ground) 2 October.
