Color changing... NOT changing color!

I have ordered, received and planted "color changing" hydrangea (8 of them). I ordered them (bare root) from directgardening.com (I hope it is OK to post that!). The are suppose to start out white changing to bluish-purple and then royal purple. The site makes no mention of what zone the can be grown in, or any mention of the botanical name. Does anyone have experience with these? Do I need to provide winter protection? Will I get blooms this year? I am hoping I didn't make a mistake in purchasing these. I have two other hydrangeas also. Which have never bloomed (at least 3 years old). I think I have figured out, from reading this forum, that it is because I haven't been winterizing them, and every year they die back to the ground. Is this correct? I can't remember the varieties, but one is a mophead and the other is a lacecap.

Any advice would be appreciated!!!
