Smallest Mini Hosta

Hosta will survive if they can - this little guy was new as a bareroot 2 shoot plant last year. After being nibbled and dug out of the ground twice in one week by Chip and Rocky (chipmunk and squirrel for those of you not old enough to remember 60's cartoons). I figured we'll see - well it finally showed and with more white than last year.

By the way are those the fingernails of a gardener or what?

I have similar looking plants in my garden but I have no idea of the name. I think they're pretty common though, I'm sure any good garden center has them. But isn't it possible that they are staying small because they're in a pot?

Awwwww, how cute! :) Now yer talkin' when you mention Masquerade. I suppose it is my very favorite small to mini plant ever. I now have purchased three of them, with a total of six eyes to date, and I cannot wait for them to multiply and divide. I also have Munchkin, which is the green form of Masquerade so they say. Wish I could remember who it is on our forum who has Masquerade in the border, because that is what sold me on getting Masquerade. I have Tot Tot, which is small, then the longissima and clausa species which are lanceolate, and Chartreuse Wiggles and Curly Fries, which make a nice spiky round-top mound. I thought that The Razor's Edge was going to be smallish, but it is very vigorous, and has already filled its 8-inch pot. It has red petioles, but with the top so lush, you have to brush them aside to take a peek at the petioles. It is a candidate for eye level viewing, still in a pot. I am very pleased with Kinbotan and Golden Tiara, which have a big hosta attitude, although not a heavy substance so far anyway. Just how big does Whirlwind and Ann Kulpa get? Both are lovely plants, might work under the maples. I think you have discovered a way to deal with your maple roots. Plant more minis, and perhaps have a groundcover look with a pattern of Masquerade and some other yellow or green fast multiplying mini.

Same as you Jan, I'm trying a second June in more sun. I think I like the colours in more shade better. The one I have in shade was lovely in the spring but the colours right now aren't as vibrant as weekendweeder's. Here's my June in full afternoon sun. Moccasin, I looked up pictures of 'Eskimo Pie'. What a beauty. Sorry to hear you're having troubles with yours. I bought Hudson Bay this year but the white centre isn't quite as broad as Eskimo Pie's.

It is really cute Paul, now I am thinking how I could add it to my garden. Maybe in with the fairies.

Grandson asked me what I was pointing at in the photo, lol I told him it wasn't me. He says it looked just like my fingers.

LEF is one of my favorites and, yes, very hardy for such a tiny little thing. Love the fingernail --- every year I have good intentions, but garden gloves last 5-10 minutes on my hands!

I once had "Cat's Eye". It was 1/2" across by 3/4" leaves. Sooooooo cute. But that was the year I lost a lot of them. The problem was me, not the hosta. I might try that one again....

I like the latex tipped garden gloves, but those only last me 3/4 of a season. (Our season is all year here in California) I gave up on having nice fingernails about 20 years ago.

Have no worries about Elfin Fire!
By this time next year, you will be dividing it into several plants.
The description; "it is vigorous and makes several divisions each season", is probably the understatement of the year!
I received a very small one, in error, during a purchase last fall and planted it in a 5" pot. When it emerged this spring, the pot was overcrowded with EFs!
It's difficult for me to believe that 'Little White Lines' was one of the parents, as it was a complete dud in my garden. A "one-eyed" wonder for many years, before I trashed it.
