Need some advice:PeeGee,Lacecap,and ES

I'm lost as to where to move my PeeGee's. I have 5 on the NE side that never bloom, maybe too much shade? There is a 200 yr.old maple that shades all day except in early morning. What do they want? Lacecap: Bought it on Cape Cod, it's 5 years old, growing very slowly and has never bloomed. What is the ideal site for this one? Finally, my ES,It bloomed profusly the first year but only sparingly since. What do these guys need and what am I doing wrong? Tried some Hollytone last year, no help. Any advice will be very helpful, I'm at a loss.

If you have a sunny spot anywhere in the yard, the pee gees will like that. Once they are mature and flowering, they can bloom under an open canopy of less sun (alot in my neighborhood that are like that). The others might like the NE side if they can get a little more sun. It is often difficult to grow under the shade of a large maple. The 2nd house that we lived in as I was growing up has a neighboring house that had a maple tree like that (and its many babies that were large themselves) and it was a challenge. Those trees were finally removed last week and OMG what a difference. My mother now has a sunny yard for the first time in almost 40 years that she has lived there.

I think they would all perform better out in more sun. The best spot I have found for my ES is full morning sun with shade during the hot part of the day. I have one that is in afternoon sun, along with a PeeGee, and I have to water it a lot. The PeeGee seems to tolerate the hot sun better. The lacecap may rarely bloom in your zone depending how cold it gets and if you winter protect it.

The 13hp Kaw is a decent engine. It will easly handle a 36" belt drive walkbehind. It will mow through some tough grass if needed. Just make sure you demo this belt drive mower long enough to get a good feel for how it steers and operates. The down side to a belt drive walkbehind mower is the reverse gear. You have to shift it into reverse or manhandle it some when you want to go backwards. Do this a few times during your demo. Ask for the manuals also. If he does not have them, you can always download them. One more thing that you may want to get is an extra set of blades to have on hand. If the current blades are the standard ones, get a set of Gators with a medium to high lift sail. A commercial mower, that is only used as a residential mower, will hold it's value.

Thanks again, Fran for some more information. I went out and bought 22 Homer Buckets from HD last week when the price dropped from nearly $5 to 2.78. Now I know I won't need to fill them completely with soil. Ok, my next question is: WHERE do Tomato Hornworms COME from? Where do they LIVE when you don't have tomatoes for them to munch on? I know JBeetles live in the ground as grubs, then attack anything in sight, but do hornworms also live in the soil, then just crawl away to find a vulnerable tomato plant in the summer?

Hi Denise, I feel kind of funny giving you advise. . . I just read about epson salt on another website and followed their reccomendations for using it. 1 tablespoon ES and 1 teaspoon molasses. The ES helps with chlorophyll and the molasses provides sugar which the plants use as energy/vigor to the roots. I did my regular house plants the other day and I swear the next day I could see a huge difference in the color. . . and they had a shine they never had before. I don't know about using it all the time but I think a few times a year would be OK. I wasn't treating any alments, just curious about the results. I was to scared to try it on my hoyas, but I think I might now. . . Hope you get yours figured out. . . Maid~
