Destined to die? My first plant is a hydrangea.

Hi, Im VERY new to gardening, and the first plant that really took my interest was the hydrangea. I got my mophead from Home depot, and by what I have been reading it was probably forced to grow, but anyway I just planted it today and I want it to live very much. When I planted it I did something that I atleast thought was a little odd, I dug a deep hole and put a layer of sand at the bottom, then peat moss, then soil, then a little more sand, peat moss and soil then the hydrangea and covered it with dirt and soil from a bag. I did this spur of moment I think because I had heard of people doing something like that "amending the soil" and I was trying to get fancy with my plant. Don't laugh, but I plan on getting another hydrangea, should I ever do that again? I have been reading hydrangeahydrangea.com but Im still pretty clueless.

Thanks
