Climbing hydrangea won't bloom
Comments (42)Your description does sound like CH is doing what it is notorious for... waiting to bloom until it reaches the top of that which it is growing on. High phosphorus levels in other plants encourage blooming but I just do not know if the plant will respond like roses do for example. Epsom salts mostly contain magnesium and some Sulfur. By the way, I am not sure how well the small tendrils will do trying to climb limestone rocks in your garage. Maybe someone has already tried and can chime in....See Morehydrangeas won't bloom
Comments (2)This happens to me whenever we have late frosts and you don't cover the plants. They are very touchy when it comes to frost. Therefore, everything will look great on the plant but no blooms. This has happened to me twice and whenever I hear of possible frost the hydrangeas get covered. Three of mine are blooming but one isn't. I think that one wasn't covered well enough....See MoreWhy won't my hydrangeas bloom?
Comments (5)Hydrangeas sold at grocery stores - like Trader Joe's - are manipulated into bloom at an early age and often, out of season. Once they have finished up with the flowers and buds they come with, they are done for that season.....and maybe even for a couple of seasons. They need time to establish in the garden and put on some maturity before they can be expected to flower again and to produce flowers of typical size. In zone 9/10, winterkill of buds is not an issue but the previous comments about pruning times are relevant. If you want a hydrangea expected to produce flowers consistantly and of "normal" size, purchase a plant intended for the landcape from a nursery or garden center. Grocery store hydrangeas, aka florist's hydrangeas, are intended as blooming houseplants or gift plants, although they can usually be transitioned into the garden well.....given time :-)...See MoreClimbing hydrangeas won't bloom
Comments (13)LOL, PM2, and Claire. You guys are pretty funny! I agree with all the advice - don't move the plant at this point. Personally I don't think these guys need fertilizer, and, really, they're the polar opposite of nasturtiums! PM, climbing hydrangea can be really hefty so if you're going to use trellis it's got to be thick and strong. The vine should have no trouble climbing a post and rail fence, though; you just might want to encourage it to 'find' the rails by tying it up until it gets the hang of it. I have one climbing up a maple, which is somewhat of a problem since I'd really like to remove the tree, and one in a corner made by a stockade fence - almost no sun there, but it's actually doing quite well. Its main role is to hide the fence, but it does also bloom....See Moremimi856
