Best way to cover hydrangeas during cold snaps?

lsst

Last years mild winter caused my hydrangeas to leaf out early.

We had a cold snap in March that caused all the old wood to die back to the ground. Of course I had no blooms last summer. :(

The plants have grown about two feet and again are leafing out due to our warm weather. I am in upstate SC- zone 7b.

We are expecting temps next week to be in the low 20's. What can I do to protect my plants from dying back to the ground?

Will covering with sheets work? I have some huge pieces of bubble wrap that I could drape over the plants at night and remove the next morning before the sun hits them. Would that work?

Thanks in advance!
