my hoya DS-70/tsangii has weird stuff on back of the leaves?

Sorry the photo isn't very good. I cut off those leaves, so I can't take another one.

Anyway, I've had this little plant for a few months, and I didn't think the stuff on the back was growing, but then I looked at a picture I took when I first received it, and yes, it has grown. Just very slowly. Like I said, I cut off those 2 leaves, even though the top of them was still green and not discolored or shriveled or anything. There are a couple spots of the stuff on the backs of the other leaves, but they are very small. What should I do? Is it fungus? Should I get some fungicide? Will any kind work?

Squidy...sorry that no one has responded yet...you know how the holidays can be!! To me, it looks like a fungal problem...but, there are so many, many variables. If it was my plant...and it is NOT H. tsangii...I would buy a fungicide from one of the big "box stores" and spray the plant thoroughly...top and bottom of each leaf..and the vines, and keep out of bright sunlight for a day or two. It's perfect that you removed the "bad" leaves..the fungicide would have never "cured" these leaves...if, indeed, it's a fungal attack. Please be sure that you're not over-watering this plant...fungus tends to occur when the plants are kept too moist or in very high humidity. Best wishes, Patrick

I agree that this looks like a fungal infection but it may be a secondary infection. There is a possibility that an pest such as spider mite may have damaged the leaf surface which allowed the infection develop. I would take a very close look for signs of pest problem.

I just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying this thread, so thanks for starting it up, David. Even though it's a very old and tired conundrum, you have such nice mature plants that it's very easy to observe the differences. Loved the lineup of store leaves, too. (And Mike's courageous "they're all DS-70" pronouncement lol!) I've poured over countless old threads on this topic before, but I think I can finally say that I can wrap my mind around the topic. Now I just have to go home and reevaluate my own DS-70/incurvula/brevialata situation. I honestly think I long ago started to slightly dislike all 3 of my candidates because they remained so stubbornly ambiguously distinctive. And yes, I do know I sound like a total noob for taking this long to sort this out, but honestly, how dull is it stare down your "brevialata" for the umpteenth time wondering if it's actually DS-70, when you could be puttering around with something that you could start a less embarrassing thread about? ^_~

Oh, the rejection is because you can't post twice in a row. When that happens, just give it a different title (like I did with my second post to you, since I just posted right before that). I really think it's nummularioides over H. sp. DS-70. Reason being is that EA tags their hoyas a certain way, and H. sp. DS-70 is always tagged H. bilobata (scroll up and you'll see a picture of the tag it comes with). If your hoya is small-leafed, roundish, and pubescent (fuzzy), then it's most likely nummularioides..."green leaf" is what they call that hoya. If it's labeled "green leaf" then the only way it can be sp. DS-70 is if the labels were switched! Either way, good luck with your new hoya. Gabi P.S. check out the link to the thread below. Steven did you start your plant from a cutting or was it an established plant when you got it? How big is the plant and does it look like it is well established in the pot root wise? I grow my DS-70 in bright light but they can do with less and still flower fine. This is one of the Hoya species that comes from high rainfall areas and does not like to dry out much so keep it watered for best results. If I can remember correctly it took my plant about two years from cuttings stage to blooming. Plants that are purchased at nurseries or home improvement stores are often just many newly established cuttings and they can take a while to settle in and bloom. Mike

Hi Pooh, Many of us know this Hoya, yes I too recall that smell. That's a nice little Hoya, I still have some of it, we call it DS 70/Tsangii. I wondered if Denise might be able to help you w/ this. Thank you both! I am careful with watering and always research every plant to know how much to water it, so I haven't been keeping this hoya too wet, it definitely has some dry time. And I have been keeping a close eye on it. No pest activity that I can see. It's a very small plant, so it will be very easy to spray thoroughly with fungicide. I will do that!
