Hosta "Linda Sue"

2 years ago I bought a single " eye" Linda Sue.
Last year it had 3 eyes. I moved it to what I thought was a better spot (Little more shade morning sun, aesthetically better)
However this spring it has only 1 bullet. Are the Seiboldiana hostas more sensitive to tree roots than others? a H. "Northern Exposure" seems to suffering the same shrinkage
It's under a good sized Ranier cherry tree so there are a fair number of roots.
My other hostas (non Sieboldiana heritage) in the same garden are doing fine.

Van Wade is the originator of Linda Sue. He named it after his daughter. I remember seeing one in his gardens that was gigantic, not to mention breath-taking, and growing in full sun.

I knew I had Linda Sue, but didn't remember it looking anything at all like Van's. I came home dug it up from it's spot where it only received morning sun and put it in full sun.

Digging up a hosta and moving it can sometimes set it back. Seiboldiana hostas tend to be slow growers though.

Here's my 3 year old Linda Sue, it loves it's new spot in the sun.

Thanks for the reply gesila, I think I'll move it to a sunnier local. I know the "siebs" are slow, but I don't like seeing them regress I was worried about leaf burn (FW heritage)

The largest Canadian mail order source (in my experience) was Hosta Choice. Last year both of the owners died. They have not updated their web site so I don't know if they will be shipping anything this year. I am on the west coast so I don't know if that makes any difference in the cost but Naylor Creek in Washington state was my other "main hosta nursery". I also ordered from Hosta Geek last year and will do so again. They are much lower priced but you do get smaller plants. This year for the first time I was going to look into ordering from "Wade". I don't know what they charge to send to Canada but they have a huge selection. Their site hasn't been updated yet either. Good Luck, McTavish

Ohhhh, you did good!! The purple leaves of heuchera are a refreshing break from greenness. I think the garden just hums with joy after a good cleansing rain. Perfect time to get out with your camera. Thanks for the eye candy.

How long have you been growing 'Linda Sue'? LS was an impulse buy late last summer. She's a sport of 'Frances Williams', which is not supposed to be prone to dessication burn. I have mine planted in morning light and expect her to grow well here. I was hosta shopping on Wednesday and was tempted to buy 'Sara's Sensation" but resisted having bought several others.

i am in zone 5b, I think. I am in the Cleveland area about 5 miles south of Lake Erie. Our summers have been extremely warm and we haven't had much rain over the past 5-6 years. I have Linda Sue in a shaded area that gets some morning sun. Even that seemed to burn the leaves so I replanted it further back in the bed under the oak trees so that it wouldn't burn. I will try and dig out some pictures I took last summer. I am not good at organizing my pictures so I will see what I can find. Wade & Gatton was in Bellville which is about 90 minutes south of me. Van Wade had lots of Linda Sues planted in an area that got quite a bit of sun but they never looked as bad as mine does in morning sun.

What a beauty, Gesila! In your zone, that should be even better in full sun than in Ohio where Van Wade is growing his. And Ontario, even better for full sun. Sounds like a good move, JimR.
