Karen, few of my Hoyas waking up too but I live in a warm area year round so I don't know if mine count.
Some of the Hoyas are resting though I can tell because no new growth at all. Hoya kenejiana is getting new set of burgundy leaves and Pachiclada is getting new leaves too. Some of the pubcalyxes are growing new leaves as well.
I think mine grows when ever they feel like because it's warm here year round.

I just took a closer look at a few of my cuttings and I noticed that my Fraterna and Shepherdii are putting out a bunch of new growth! Yay!

Hi Pirate Girl, I have a guess. Maybe your bathroom is just slightly warmer than where the other plants are, and with the warmth combined with humidity there getting, it might be just enough to encourage some new growth? Maybe you'll have to conduct a little experiment.

Seems like some of mine want to grow (though not exactly with enthusiasm...) right now. With days getting shorter, you'd think they'd be slowing. Could yours with new growth be younger plants that have rooted over the last year? In my experience, it takes a rooted/rooting cutting about a year to get itself established to the point that it will put out new growth. It seems when it gets to that point, whatever time of year, it spurts out some new growth. After a bit, it goes back into semi-dormancy (I don't think Hoyas ever go into complete dormancy...) Could that be the case, or are these older, established plants??

In either case, I wouldn't discourage it! Yay and good growing!

Some of my hoyas are going through a growing stage as well. The days are definately shorter where sunlight is concerned. I have my hoyas in East and Southern windows. My KP is growing vigorously (south window) and the first sight of new growth with my carnosa (east window) I've had both since August or sept. of this year. Both are established plants (not cuttings). I did get cuttings back in beg. of October and I have seen new growth on Marlea, and either carnosa verg. or carnosa tri-color, not sure which one i saw the new leaf on. I need to move those two away from eachother so I can remember next time.

But within the last few days the hoyas mentioned above seem to be at a much slower rate than the past few weeks. I guess b/c of the cooler weather. My indoor temperature is between 70-73 degrees or so.

Hi, I just noticed that the imperialis hoya that I brought back from south east asia this July is starting to get a few little buds and maybe a new leaf or something not sure yet.This hoya was very sad looking when I replanted it when I got it home. It lost all of her leaves except 4 on a 2 or 3 foot vine. I am a bit relieved that i see some sort of growth. I was going to take some pictures but the batteries are dead so I will tomorrow. Maybe this is not waking up but just settling in to its new home finnley.

Well the 'waking plants' are established, at least 4-5 yrs. old each. I wonder if Nicole might be onto something in suggesting maybe the added humidity in the bathroom, whether it's warmer in there or not is related to this growth spurt. The other thing that's unique abt that spot (the bathroom window, west) is that it's frosted glass & Hoyas seem to particularly like the combination of that light & thru that diffusing kind of glass.

Hey PG, I don't think my hoyas have ever gone to sleep:-). We've had a really warm winter and most are growing like it's spring/summer.

I have noticed my hoyas that are not right against the windows or under lights are slowing down on their growth. I too have one of those frosted windows in my bathroom and the plants in there love it. I have a hoya in there growing beautifully even getting a peduncle, I believe. Something about the bathrooms.

Bathrooms give the Hoyas humidity they love. The same reason during humid season they gorw so well here in FL.

I'm no expert, I only have 2 hoyas Kentiana & Ttsangi. This is their 2nd winter and they have not slowed down in the winter so far. K has no less than 12 new leaves forming most of the time, sometimes 4 on one stem. T has small ones forming all over the plant. I was wondering if they were going to tapper off in the winter, and they still may. I guess time will tell.

I noticed yesterday that my minibelle (which is still pretty young...) has a new shoot, which has a little peduncle forming! I have doubts that it will actually flower before spring, but who knows? Tsangii is gearing up to bloom again, but that's normal for tsangii... Seems like it goes along and blooms for several months, takes a little breather, then starts again, no matter what time of year.

One thing I've I've noticed in the past is that when we have a winter where we have snow on the ground a lot of the winter, the Hoyas (and some others, like jungle cacti) seem to stay more active. I think it's the reflective characteristics of the snow - it makes the fewer hours of light more intense. It's one of the reasons I never complain too much about a snowy winter!

Maybe that is why they do so beautifully in Sweden.
Mine definitely slow WAY down in winter. Some will put out a new leaf or two (especially the ones under lights that stay on later), but most have stopped blooming and growing much.

Back To Hoyas, what is Minibelle? Is that a baby Bella of some kind?

My 'wakeful' Hoyas continue merrily along & in the kitchen window my suspected H shepardhii continues to lengthen its penduncles. Looks like it's gonna tease me all winter long ... sigh!

Lot of my plants continue to grow, some are faster then others and some actually take a break every now and then. H minibell is shepardii x carnosa. There is a same cross one called shepardell.
I think my Hoya sipitange is budding now.

Yes, but you're in FLA right? Stuff just grows all yr. for you Floridians, irrespective of whether it's indoors or out.

Not so here in NYC on or near the window legdes & it hasn't really gotten cold here, just a couple of days in 30s so far.

Karen... I go nowhere near the malls this time of year, thank goodness. Do all my shopping online. And yes, it's such a horrible thing to happen. I would have never thought it would happen here, but I'm sure everyone says that. The mall where it happened was my mall of choice to shop at back in the days that I was willing to fight the crowds...

Jan - minibelle and shepherdell are both hybrids of carnosa and shepherdii, but they are different. Shepherdell is described as a "sister seedling" of minibelle. I find that minibelle's leaves are wider and stouter than shepherdell. I think minibelle's characteristics favor carnosa, whereas shepherdell's favor shepherdii.

I have a minibelle but not the shepherdell. The minibelle leaves are wider and much shorter then shepherdii(I have shepherdii). if you happen to have both minibelle and sheperdell, I would love to see side by side comparison picture. Just curious.
I thought about getting sheperdell but I didn't buy shepprdell because the plants look so much alike.

My shepherdell hasn't grown enough for me to know if the growth habit is more like shepherdii or carnosa, and I haven't gotten flowers yet. Minibelle seems to grow more like carnosa than shepherdii. HTH...

I've got quite a few putting on significant growth right now! Two changes occurred prior to this phenomena- one I switched from distilled water to fish aquarium water (mixed with the same amount of VF-11 and H202 as the distilled) and two the leaves have dropped from all of the trees, so the sun is a little more intense for a couple of hours a day (do note that I supplement with fluorescent lighting for pretty long periods as well).

Among those with good new growth right now are:

cv Iris Marie which has put one HUGE new RED leaves. The one set of new leaves is at least twice the size of the "original" leaves on the plant.

You know, I've noticed that a lot of hoyas that I buy grow HUGE new leaves as soon as I get my hands on em, and I really do think it is from the Eleanor's VF-11. One hoya in particular that shocked me is a reverse variegated kerrii that I received from someone.

I don't know, it might just be a coincidence since it doesn't happen with all my hoyas, but I've been finding some huge leaves on quite a few hoyas, where all the old leaves are much smaller. Anyone else experience this?

That is quite a bit bigger than the older leaves.....it will be interesting to see how big the next leaf gets. Do you find it is a slow grower? Mine grows painfully slow.

Well, my regular kerrii used to grow slow but then took off after about a year of doing nothing. I find it to be a pretty fast grower. My variegated kerrii has done nothing yet (I've only had it for a few months though), and the reverse variegated kerrii grew that one ginormous leaf and then dropped the second leaf it was growing.

I've heard that kerrii is a slow grower by some, and a fast grower by others. So I wouldn't worry.

I've had the experience that Kerrii can take really long to get established, then can grow quickly. My solid ones (2 pots) are fast growing, my variegate, tho' a recent cutting is prob. going to be very slow.

My hoya kerrii reverse variegation has done nothing since I purchased it in September.

Gabi, the difference in the size your leaves is much like with my Iris Marie.

Wonder if it is the Eleanors? Regardless, I'm not planning on changing anything I'm doing, because I like what I'm seeing!

By the way, Gabi, how's that cute little H. Lyi doing?

Oh, forgot to mention for anyone who has been part of past dscussions regarding if more light makes the edges of h. kentiana or wayetti darker - I took a picture of my kentiana the weekend of Thanksgiving and the leaves were solid green. Since then it's receiving a little more intense sun because of the leaves falling from the trees in front of the window and now the edges are almost black and it's putting off new growth! The leaves are just gorgeous! When I received the plant labeled wayetti, it already had darker edges. It is under fluorescent lighting only and while it has retained the darker edges it is in NO way as intense as the kentiana in the southern window.

That is exactly what I've been noticing on a bunch of hoyas. Your picture really illustrates it! I agree - either way I will always use Eleanor's. I was just curious about it. And that cute lyi is doing great - no new growth, but I just love it.

All this talk about Eleanors and I am glad I purchased it, it is in the mail somewhere, I ordered it last week. Is there directions on the back on how much to mix with water. And is that what everyone that uses Eleanor's does, goes by the directions on the bottle?

The directions are on the bottle. I use 2 tablespoons of Eleanor's and 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of aquarium (or distilled) water!

Yup...I go by the directions also. I put 4 capfuls of Eleanor's into 1 gallon of water. If you plan to use it as a foliar spray as well, then you can dilute it the same way into the spray bottle. Enjoy it!

At the time I tried it, I had teased someone here for posting the very next day after they tried it, saying he saw a difference.

I misted it on the first night & I too found my plants noticebly perkier aftewards, just from the sample bottle.

I use it as directed (2 capfuls per 1/2 gallon). I stopped fertilizer when I started using it, per their suggestion in the directions.

I found the same thing with my wayetti (or kentiana - wish I could find someone who could give me a distinctive difference betweeen the two...) I have a small one that sits on a shelf in a north window and you have to look closely to see the darker edges. I wanted to show it this summer in my C&S club show and so I put it in the GH for 3 days before the show and the edges darkened right up. I was amazed at how quickly it happened. Now it's back on the shelf and the edges are less distinct again. Interesting...
