I just got my first edition of Stemma, and I thought it was great reading. I Just wanted to say I recognized a few names from around here and I have to say awesome for you guys......you are world renowned in the hoya world!! I enjoyed the issue, especially since it was all about propagation. Cant wait for the next issue!! Good Job to those involved!!

Yes, that is a wonderful issue. Mark is a super guy for making it available to us for free on the internet like this.
There are actually FOUR past issues. You can get any of them by writing to Mark.

Apparently Mr. Randal is quite busy with another project that is not related to Hoyas at the moment. I am unsure if Stemma will continue to be produced but he is aware that there are people who are interested so hopefully he will continue where he left off. Mike

One of these days, I will make it out to Exotic Angel greenhouse(if they will let me tour it)? I actually live only two hours away from Apopka, FL. I think I might have bought an EA Hoya with one of "newer soil" that they mentioned on that article. When I first bought it, I noticed that it didn't seem to be as wet and heavy as the ones that I normally get from them, even though I can see it was wet...So I thought I wouldn't change the soil on this one, like I normally do and see how it does? It was almost completely dry in four days! Even though I grow the bigger hoyas outside, I have never had an EA hoya dry that quickly, I also added a wick...which might have also helped it dry more quickly...so I am definitely loving this new soil that they are using. There are so many new growths on this one already. I only bought it two weeks ago! Mike, thanks for that great Stemma link...I really enjoyed reading the EA article. Now I just have to go hunting for the "Ruby Red" and/or "Royal Flush".

Patrick, Here is the link to the main page for PS-The Hoyan that Christine Burton publishes every few months. Just bookmark this site and check back for new issues. All of the back issues are listed here, also. http://www.psthehoyan.com/ Yes, a book on culture would be nice, but most of the folks you mentioned above do not get along very well, unfortunately. Christine Burton is really trying to figure out the true identity of a lot of the misnamed hoya species. Chris always provides documentation to back up her reasoning for her conclusions. Some of the others in the group above are not that dedicated to the cause. As you go through the past issues of PS-The Hoyan, you will find out that a lot of what is published in the Int'l Hoya Assn publication is not accurate. I've had a sub to this for a year and I am not going to renew due to so much wrong info and that fact there isn't any cultural info. If you are not aware of the Stemma Journal, here is a link to a great publication that Mark Randal puts out about once a quarter. Lots of great info here. You can download the PDFs from the site. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader to download the PDFs. http://www.stemmajournal.com/ Go to the downloads link at the top for all of the Journals that have been published so far. The Journal is free, which I find amazing, given the great info and amount of time that Mark puts into the publication. There is a new book on Hoyas that was just published recently. Ima-digger I love Sylvinebr's photostream on Flickr. My plant is still far too small to bloom so all I have is a few leaf photos. GG nice plants. I have so many plants that I have never photographed and I tend to only take photos of blooming plants so Hoya wise I have many more unbloomed plants in my collection. My mounted Hoya loherii has four or five peduncles budding up at the moment so as long as they don't blast I should be able to add some new photos. Wondering what one would use to fend off a mob of pitchfork wielding Hoya thieves? Maybe a few sacrificial cuttings and an electrified perimeter fence? How about a nice cup of herbal tea? LOL Here are my older photos. Probably Hoya pallilimba Hoya heuschkeliana yellow Hoya heuschkeliana and Hoya DS-70 comparison Hoya sp Sulawesi GPS 7729 Hoya tsangii Backside of Hoya micrantha leaf Hoya picta Quinn Hoya lucardenasiana is such a great Hoya and tsangii is so delicate. I would highly recommend both but you might have to look for tsangii under the name odetteae. If you want to see the east coast of Canada I would recommend Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy and it's incredible tidal bore rivers. Last year I visited Truo and the site in the video but I took mostly still photos. The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island would be a fantastic trip as well. In the process of trying to figure out what STEMMA was I found the older issues online. Very cool online magazine! Doesn't appear to have the newest issue though. Would someone be able to send that one to me, please? kellyknits@comcast.net Nova, if you haven't received the back issues yet, send me an email and I'll send the link to you. I'm guessing because of it's location I can't just tell you where it is...(hint, hint...Hawaii...)

Gabi, several of my cuttings rooted in NO time after putting everything in the baggies. Thank you! A couple are a little woody and haven't rooted yet. Debating whether to get a germination mat off eBay for a little bottom heat.

So STEMMA is some kind of on-line magazine? Is it just about hoyas or other plants too? Can I somehow get on a mailing list? :)

Spent the day reading the latest issue of Stemma. Great job Mark, and all you very knowledgeable members who contributed.! I just mailed an order for some cuttings, and can't wait to try the different ways to root them. I usually use the water method, but sometime they don't take.

Thanks Jan. I was really clueless as to how to even begin an article, but figured I would just write what I do to root my cuttings, and that is what came out.
I just loved reading everyone else's methods and may just try a few other things come spring too.
It is a kick seeing your name in a publication like that.

And Marcy, I really enjoyed your article. I totally hear ya on seeing your name in a publication like that :) My serpens pic was in the last issue of Stemma, and it was such an honor!

Kelly, I'll email you the newest issue. Glad to hear that your cuttings rooted so fast! I really have had great success with that method. Bottom heat might be a good idea - I just rooted a few cuttings recently in this cold weather, and the bottom heat really sped up the process.

Everyone else that asked about how to subscribe, I think you can either email Mark or subscribe on the "hawaii" site. I can't post the hawaii site here, so if anyone needs it, just email me.

Just finished looking at all of the STEMMA mag's. What a great magazine! The newest issue is just priceless with all of the rooting tips - great job to all who contributed to it! You guys should be very proud.
Thanks again, Gabi, for forwarding the current issue to me. I'll not only be saving that one to my computer, but also printing it out and keeping it close at hand to where I'm rooting the cuttings.
Gabi, I did order a heat mat for the 2 cuttings which haven't rooted yet and for any future cuttings...hoping it gets here soon. Is there any point where you give up on cuttings? As long as it hasn't wilted do you keep trying? BTW- very excited that my Callistophylla seems to be fairly well rooted. It didn't move at all when I tugged on it!

Glad you are doing well with your rooting - and I just LOVE callistophylla! Congrats.
I wouldn't give up on cuttings. If I start to see the stem rotting, I'll cut the rotting part and try again. If it continues to happen, I'll try different things (i.e., add more humidity, add a heat mat, put it in a different area, mist more/less, etc.). I guess the last resort is to try to water root the cutting (I've never had to do that, but if the cutting is dying/wilting, it may be your best bet). I've had some cuttings that were extremely difficult to root (took MONTHS) - so as long as it's not "dying" and it still looks pretty healthy, I'd stick with the way you're doing it now.

Does anyone root their cuttings in sand? When I received my Hoya cuttings from David Liddle this spring I rooted them in damp sand. I sterilized the sand by pouring boiling water on it, when it cooled down I filled small pots and rooted my cuttings in these. I don't recall how long it took for them to root but when I went to pot them up they all had great roots, they've doubled their length since then and side shoots are forming on three of them.

As a small service to Mark's efforts, anyone who has signed on recently and hasn't received previous issues of Stemma, please send me an e-mail including your e-mail address and I will do a mass mailing of the previous 3 issues this weekend to you. This is a one time service! Once you miss it, you will have to search other means to collect them.

OK, please forgive me if I sound like an idiot...

What exactly IS this Stemma thing? I can't find it on the internet, I have no idea who this Mark person is or how to contact him, and I'm clueless as to how to get on the mailing list should I be interested.

Perhaps this Stemma thing is for a private hoya club? If so, I'm jealous but fine with that. If not, here you all are, teasing us with stories of great hoya articles and photos, yet no one has explained what the heck Stemma it is or how to join. You're making some of us drool! ;)

Some details and clairifications would be greatly appreciated by the hoya-dumb like myself. :)
