New Olive Bailey Langdon

I went ahead and bought my OBL today, but am wondering if I made a mistake.

We only had 5 plants at work and all of them seemed to have spots. No one at work seemed to know what the spots were and the guy that would know was not in today.

Are these spots something I should avoid? Should I return it to work and look else where for a OBL?

you worry too much

first pic.. looks like something fell from height and pierced the leaf .. who cares ... branches in my yard ... acorns... etc ...

second pic... tan tissue.. frost ... or sunburn.. typical frances williams type injury ... spring dessication or something ....

never figured what the little brown spots are... dead tissue.. bug bite.. will mull that.. some inactive brain cell ..

QUIT WORRYING... lol .. its a beauty ....

Mine have been in the ground for about 7 or 8 years now and have been rather neglected since probably 2009. We did get significant rainfall last year and I have no doubt that greatly benefited all of my hostas. The appearance of these two for me has really changed so much since they were young plants.

Nothing wrong with Francis Williams, I have 6, they have wonderful leaves and love them all. The only one in too much sun burned a little, got moved under a dogwood and is beautiful there. In its place I put the 2 combined OBL, see above, and they also got a little burn, and I put a shade in front of them. Bernd

Gesila, how many years ahead of me are you with your garden, just a couple? I cannot believe it, you know so much more than I do. What you say about showing mature plants to those with young ones, I'm almost there. These days I have to move the pots further apart than before. I started in 2012, so some of mine are acting mature to me at least....my viewing mature hosta is mostly in pictures, and at Bob Seawright's display garden in Carlisle MA. I can appreciate your "serious hosta ego"...like the term a lot. Maybe you should buy the sleep tee says: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY HOSTA. (I have one)

My OBL, actually 2 plants, looks great in spring, see the picture on 6-05-2011. But then in summer it will burn severely in 2 hours of midday sun. I noticed that Frances Williams will get no or less spring burns (and will have larger leaves) when planted in shade because it will come out of the ground and unfurl its leaves later in spring when the chance of frost is less. Stephanie,your OBL looks fine to me too. You'll be surprised next year when it comes back up,at how much it will grow in just one season! Good luck! Phil
