thinking of setting up my hoophouse in my garage...
Comments (8)"thinking of setting up my hoophouse in my garage..." You must be nuts! Just look at the disadvantages. No sunlight. No solar heating. No high winds. No hail damage. No critters burrowing in. No UV to wreck your poly covering. A totally controlled artificial environment tailored to your exact requirements. Where is the fun? The challenge? Fighting the elements is what we do best on the greenhouse forum! Now, being serious, you are not nuts. I do not know which zone 5 you are in (them zone things are really misleading, USDA zones are based on how cold your worst cold is, not on how much sun you get or how hot your baddest hot is) but depending on what you are wanting to grow then your idea is a great one. In my zone heating in winter is very expensive (-15F is not unusual at night) also cooling in summer is costly. Try it. You can build an "indoor" hoophouse for very little cost. You have to artificially light it and you may have to heat it. However the lighting and heating costs combined may be way lower than the heating cost of an outdoor hoophouse. If you do try it, consider switching day and night in there. Turn the lights off in the day, lights on all night. Why? Lights make heat. Nights are cooler. Makes sense to use the waste heat from the lights when you need it most. My dream is a greenhouse in a deep cave.... :)...See MoreWinter Set Up
Comments (5)FlowerPotTipper, Your collection isnt pathetic at all!! I started out (20 yrs ago) with those little 1 inch pots from the grocery store, killed them all, but they were so damn cute I kept buying them. I finaly got the hang of it and would buy a cactus when I saw one. I already had a million tropical plants. Remember there was no internet back then and being young and single money was tight too. Then I got married and was a stay at home Mom. The internet was invented and I had more cash. The plants really were a source of peace that I sorely needed at that time. When my specimens grew to "specimen" size and I started getting blooms I was really hooked. I found this website, saw plants I had to have and got really good at propagating, hence more plants. Everytime my husband pissed me off I bought a plant, as you can see I'm divorced now, lol. Eventually I had to move out of my much larger house with 33 windows to a small townhouse (because of divorce, not the plants lol). I refused to give up my collection on principal! I lived in Houston for a while so I think they remind me of better days. Now I count the days until April. The comments I get from visitors are funny. Hmmm... this would make a good thread.... Comments (22)Hay it's great to see everyone set ups!! Amy, I'm pretty much doing the same as you. I've got T8's hooked up.I'm curious to know what types of lights you used - My T8's didn't come with the coverage yours did.I dislike seeing the lights. I didn't use the chain, I used tie raps, pretty strong, holds in place real well. Dunno I kinda like the chain look though. LOL - It's true it's a 2 person job to set these things up, uhhhh you learn these things as you go. I just set up another stand last nite, This is for mainly my tree frogs. Although I don't think squeezing a few of mommies orchids would matter to the frogs.hee hee Keep those photo's comming, love to see what others are doing. I'll try to get some up soon. Comments (23)Lycheelova, I have been looking for your 800w mh and I can't find it. Is it comparable too the halides or is it better. I am just wondering because I have supplemental lighting on my christmas list this year and i would like your light. I found the other light on ebay. Do you know the company that manufactures your light? Right now I am just using flourescent shop lights. My mango flowers are falling off now but I have 3 small fruits. My keylime is all budded up but most of the buds are dropping. I think my keylime needs more humidity. Andrew...See Moreshanna5
