Pick Your Color

The red heuschkeliana disappointment made me wonder what color varieties we'd invent if we could wave our magic wands.

I'm thinking I'd like an... australis ssp. tenuipes with orange blossoms. And shouldn't subcalva come in a purple? I'd also like more black flowers, sayyy a blacky-blue multiflora or pachyclada? Oh and a bright green buottii.

What would you conjure if you could influence the next discovery?

GG, we both have the same creative mind! Remember me posting about if you had the choice to name a hoya? The gears are turning in my mind for colors and names! I like the idea of an orange flowered australis. Orange is one of my favorite colors. I only know of one black hoya which is pubicalyx Black Dragon and I agree about seeing more black flowered hoyas and other plants as well.

Personally, I would like to see a blue flowered hoya myself. Maybe a carnosa with golden yellow flowers? A shepherdii with red flowers? Ah, the wonders of imagination!

I know the pic has been photoshopped but to have one like the white carnosa with the green corona would be TOTALLY awesome!!!

Anyone pick paint color FIRST when decorating?

Letting a beautiful rug form the basis for a room's color scheme works fine, as long as you A) already happen to own a beautiful rug or B) you have somewhere else to live while you wait to find a beautiful rug that you C) fall in love with and D) can afford, and then, gradually, build the rest of your room around it. For a long time, that's been the 'ideal' decorating scenario. But for those people who can't wait for the planets to align--which group includes myself-- picking your wall color first works out OK. Of course, as Dilettante discovered, you may find that the perfectly lovely color you choose for your walls doesn't come in anything but paint. And, if you're into the perfectly co-ordinated look, that can be a problem, but it it doesn't have to be. You don't hear people critiquing the blue of the sky because it doesn't match the blue of the pool, or the lake, or the iris, or your kid's eyes. That's all irrelevant. The blue is a background, so it doesn't need to match, and I generally take that low-stapproach when I'm working on a room for a client. Life's hard enough already without worrying about stuff like that. And at home, I never use my wall color anywhere else in a room, certainly not that exact color. It's lots more interesting if there's some contrast, or even a little dissonance between foreground & background. It makes the room look less stagy & contrived, and, basically, less decoratorish--and I say that as a decorator. So if I were determined to have a yellow room, I would get one, and I wouldn't worry about not finding yellow fabrics to go with it, but would just slap the color on the wall. Then, if it takes me a year or two to put the rest of the place together, I at least have a nice color in the meantime. That ought to count for something. By the last inning, when I've got most of my furnishings, I can always change to a different yellow if I think it might better complement the rest of the stuff, but then, maybe it's that dissonance thet gives the room its life. All I can say is that my furniture is a hodgepdge of different woods, fabrics, patterns & textures and that it's all worked equally well in rooms of a bunch of different colors: cornemal yellow, duck egg blue, spruce green,, paper bag brown, oyster gray, olive green & the newest one, Farrow & Ball's Churlish Green, the first time I've ever used an off-the-shelf paint color. So don't get all hung up on the rules about sequence. You can either follow the rules or the you can make up your own rules. That's what I do. One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons shows an older chef talking to his assitant who's adding some herbs to a pot: "Look, who CARES how much oregano you use!" It's like that. Don't make yourself crazy. It's only decorating. Regards, Magnaverde.

Picking 3 Colors or Can Camel Be a Neutral?

Jo Ann, I believe I paid $52.00 a gallon. Well worth it. I like the coverage (used much less than Farrow and Ball paint at half the cost). For a 12 x 12 room approx. I only used less than 1/2 gallon and that's with two coats. It dries slowly as compared to Aura and even BM. Or maybe it just dries differently. The color is more clear and intense in a good way. I had Bleeker Beige in his room before and it was sort of ho hum boring. This color is deeper and depending on lighting can go either more olive green or more brownish. But not muddy at all. Her colors seem vibrant almost as if the light amplifies the color in a good way (not garish). I need less artificial lighting now and the room looks cleaner if that makes sense. Sort of the feeling you get after a good rain storm when everything looks crisp and clean. And I have to say Ellen is awesome. She felt bad cause one dealer she tried to get mixed for me, screwed it up. She actually sent me two gallons free of charge and had them delivered no charge the following day. Now that is good service and an amazing person. I would have gladly paid because it wasn't her fault. There are so many colors I would like to try. The colors are beautiful and she has a good sense of color and is really helpful. She can send you large hand painted swatches so you can really play around with them in different lighting situations. She has a ton of neutrals that would work for you and some bold colors as well. I think with the natural setting your house is in, full spectrum would be awesome. It wouldn't hurt to call her as she is an amazing person who really wants to help out. I wasn't sure of the color for the room in question but in the end, Ellen was right. Honestly, Bm colors, while nice, just look flat and lifeless in comparison. The full spectrum just ights up the walls. I have one more room to paint and it's a hard call between Farrow and ball and EK. But I know the EK just makes the walls come alive and I am drawn to that. Let me just add that I was one of those people that liked greyed down colors. There's just somethng special about full spectrum paint. I think I am becoming a paint snob or maybe i just like experiencing new types of paint rather than the status quo. Go to he website and you can see many photos and even do a search here. October Kaleidoscope class - Lesson 1

I just discovered this forum and then I clicked on this post because I wanted to see how you taught a class on the kaleidoscope blocks. This is a very exciting block and I know because I have made quite a few of them. I just want to assure those that use this class will find it exciting to see the various blocks develope. I learned this method several years ago from Bethany Reynolds book Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts. After awhile I didn't like following her method of joining the blocks but just appliqued a block onto a square block and joined them adjoining or alternating with a solid block. I had never tried joining them as you have shown. I'll be interested in seeing how you determine the way to join them. So I'll drop in every once in awhile. ferrellee5

David that is a great Blog, very funny stuff. The green makes me think a nice minty scent would go well with that bloom. LOL

If I were more competent with phtotoshop I would try and create some of these imaginatively coloured Hoya flowers.

Brad: lol I did actually think about your thread about naming a Hoya as I created this one. I don't remember if I ever responded to that one or not, but I thought about everyone's responses a lot, debating over whether I'd be whimsical like you or pragmatic like mikedahms.

David: You know, I'd seen that blog before, but I don't think I ever read it, so I didn't realize that he'd invented a number of new cultivars. I am completely batty about that kermit carnosa, too.

Mike: I'm so glad you took this into the domain of fragrances. I love the idea of a mint smelling Hoya.

I'm not really any good with Photoshop either, but here are my homages to our ideas so far.

GG, wow! I'm in love with both of them! My fave of the two is the 'Miles Davis' shepherdii. Something about that blue color strikes a chord with me. I like that carnosa dmichael showed us too!

A mint scented hoya would be neat and a great air freshener! I'd like one that smells like honeysuckle, roses or moonflowers. I wouldn't mind a strawberry or a peach scented hoya either.

What do moonflowers smell like? It's funny, I was thinking strawberry too, even though that's not usually my favorite flavor. Peach is a great idea. Or, I'm thinking coconut, almond and cinnamon (like whoever it was who suspected cinnamomifolia of smelling of cinnamon). Magnolia mmmmm...

Here's another offering. I originally wanted to do it white and name it Narcissa (lol) but here it is in green. I'm not sure that I really care for this shade of green, but if I don't post it now, it will be the weekend and I'll forget.

Hoya Juno

It occurred to me as I was letting my imagination run wild that there are some types of Hoyas in which we are particularly lucky. You have to reach to imagine a wayettii-esque flower in a color that's not out there. And there's some really nice variety among the erythrostemma/mindorensis bunch. Or the campanulate flowers seem to cover the whole spectrum.

The orange Hoya australis is really eye catching and the blue Hoya shepherdii looks kinda like an Agapanthus flower to me, at least in colour.
I just noticed the variety name for the australis, I love the smell of cantaloupe! LOL

lol me too! This summer my mother's farmhand grew some kind of amazing gargantuan Mexican cantaloupe and when I'd bring them home, they'd perfume my entire kitchen with that scent, even unsliced and from inside the refrigerator. I wish I could have them all year long. v_v
