Sun exposure, deer, and hostas

Let me begin by saying that I know very, very little about plants and gardening, although I am very, very interested in learning more!

I did a google search on hostas to see if I could use them in my landscape. I always thought of hostas as shade-lovers, so I am questioning if I can use them on the eastern side of the house. I don't want them to burn in the morning and early afternoon sun. Several websites said this exposure is fine, but are they just trying to make a sale? Thoughts?

Another question I have is about deer. One of the websites said that deer love hostas. We had deer and a few hostas at our old house and never had a problem (was it just luck?). Before I buy about 30 hostas for our new house I just wanted to know if there is a threat with deer. Thanks!
