Everyone's always looking for Hoya recommendations, so I thought maybe we could put our heads together and compile a BIG list of the best of the best.

For any awards ceremony there needs to be categories and I'd love everyone's recommendations for any of the following categories:

I should emphasize, I think, that the primary purpose of this thread is to generate as many recommendations per category as possible. That way it will be useful to anyone looking for a particular characteristic in future acquisitions.

So, if your passion is small growing Hoyas and you have 10 favorites, don't feel like you should only list your favorite, maybe just STAR your favorite. ^_^

Hi everyone, Sorry I've ebeen AWOL for awhile. Spring is always such a busy time. I've been trying to get the yard & gardens cleaned up. DH is expecting to start a new job in a couple of weeks, its suppose to pay about twice as much. He'll be driving OTR again with only one day home per week so we're trying to get stuff here taken care of beforehand (building GH, fixing stuff, etc).He gave his current job his 2 wk notice just 2 days ago and they called today letting him go (on his day off)! Now we're really hoping the new job is as good as it sounds!! I got the last of my WS potted yesterday. Out of 160+ jugs there were only about 15-20 that didn't sprout...not bad I guess for my first WS attempt. I'm waiting for my BIL to till my new gardens so I can plant stuff...alot of my potted seedlings have bloomed! Bluebonnets, Lacy Phacelia, and Nasturtiums of every color! I hope they're still blooming by the time I get them in the gardens! Kym, thanks for sending the May list in advance! At least I won't get behind on that! LOL I'm fine with recieving emails from forum members...sounds like you have an interesting game up your sleeve. Count me in! I hope all April Bday buddies are having a wonderful BDay month!!!!! What you drew (plus thinking about the additional comments from others) is much better than what the KD did. I'm going to point out just a few things, most very general, to think about. A corner is difficult to use in any meaningful way for doing prep. Unless you use an angled corner, you can only work at one side or the other. In the drawings above with the range on the dining room side wall, the person at the range "controls" the corner space. It's worth thinking a little about who gets how disturbed when: -- Dishes are loaded/unloaded from dishwasher -- Person makes snack (ref-micro-sink-dishes-silverware-trash) -- Location of trash and whether to have multiple locations (i.e. spouse gonna run that drippy coffee filter to the other side of the island?). Spend some time sitting back and noticing what actually goes on simultaneously in the kitchen. The idea is to both make everything convenient but yet not have pathways that twist up everyday tasks. There may not be a way to get everything, but know the trade-offs. A seated person takes up about 24" of aisle space. A person needs about 32" minimum to become seated. A 42" aisle to a blank wall (measuring counter to wall) with stools ends up with an aisle 18" wide behind the seated people. It's the kind of thing that's ok if its just used occasionally for passage, but not ok if there is a destination on both sides. An example would be the bar and an entertainment deck behind the left side wall would cause lots of people to go behind the folks seated in the stools. Pinch points tend to make people consider going around the "other side" of an island, they trot through the work area instead of the seating area because it looks like the passage is wider. That can be annoying if frequent. Since it looks like you have table space in the kitchen, consider ditching the stools for a double-sided island. It's what I would do - I don't like tight spaces and pushing stools back in constantly. A hood is supposed to be 24-27" deep. It will work better if its also wider than the range as buehl has shown. IF your hood is the recommended depth, you could have some issues with accessing the corner wall cabinet - with the odds of its affecting you getting larger with right handedness. It kinda of plays out like this... There is less than one foot of counter frontage for your body facing the cabinet. You'd be reaching with your right hand. Your right shoulder will not clear the hood projection. So you'd do stuff like open the cabinet door with your left hand with your face in the hood, then poke your head over to see where the thing you want is, then place you face in the hood again while finding the item by feel. Different issue but still with hoods (and a little bit also with corners). Be careful how you spec the opening of the wall cabinet doors so they don't open into the hood. Yes, you could install a chain to limit the opening. Lastly, that chain would have had a life span of about 10 minutes with my brothers and current spouse. Your family might be different and that's ok. It's just an example of planning for how you and your family ARE, not how you daydream they would become. Always try to evaluate whether or not a given thing would work for your actual family as well as listening to how something worked out for someone else. Wow, I way the h-ll lecture :)

Some pictures from earlier today showing hardy hibiscuses, hydrangeas and purple coneflowers providing color - the hydrangeas started in mid-July and the hibiscuses and coneflowers about a week later. Red hibiscuses will start blooming in a week or so. The heptacodium tree will bloom in early September (we're hoping for a good monarch butterfly year this year since the monarchs LOVE this tree!) White phlox is blooming now too in the front bed as the white veronicastrum starts to fade. Pink Beauty potentilla shrubs bloom from late May into September with the color starting out pink in cool weather, fading to almost white in the heat of the summer, and returning to shades of pink as the weather cools down again in early fall. The garden produces a nice stream of color for months here - we're not too good on fall color though :-( Hibiscuses (probably 'Disco Belle' - but I'm not sure....) - and a 'White Moth' hydrangea at the street end - along the north side of the driveway, with part of the main front garden behind: In June peonies provide a similar effect along the north driveway border. The south side of the driveway is dominated by a ninebark shrub, smaller roses, and daylilies. Out of the picture on the right is a big 'Pink Beauty' potentilla shrub - see separate picture. There is a 'Midnight Marvel' hardy hibiscus that will provide big, dark red flowers against the ninebark in a week or so. To the right of the potentilla shrub in the above picture is the path to the south gate - the house side has a lot of coneflowers (as a result of me dumping deadheads of them from elsewhere in the garden!) and a hydrangea on the other side near the gate. Soon a red hardy hibiscus ('Lord Baltimore' I think....) will join the show: This time of year is actually one of the most colorful times of year in this garden thanks largely to hardy hibiscuses, hydrangeas and purple coneflowers. They do, however, mark the approaching end of the growing season so that's always a bit unwelcome :-)
