Should I remove these leaves?

My hoya kerrii variegated never seems to grow. Is it because of these leaves?

In the photo the leaves look whiter but outside they're pale green. Should I remove them to promote growth?

Hi Xuan,

Variegates just tend to be slower growers, I suppose because they photosynthisize less due to less green surface. If you have some all-white growth, that will slow it down further. Some remove all-white growth, some don't. I generally do, though I might wait a few months and enjoy the white growth for awhile before removing it. It's awfully pretty, but I feel it's not worth sacrificing growth, because that's really what we live for in our plants, right?

I just got my variegated kerrii this spring and it put on a little new growth, but not much. I'm hoping it'll take off next year, but I'm certainly not anticipating growth like I see with the green kerriis!

I agree w/ Denise on this.

I just got a Kerri looking very much like this one, including one large leaf w/out any green on it (but not white, the leaf is really the palest yellow/green). I've grown a number of Kerri variegates & found them ALL to be VERY slow. I have a small cutting of Reverse varieg. Kerrii (2 nodes, 3 leaves, 1 peduncle), has done NOTHING in a whole year (I grow indoors only, but still).

I'd wait & see, give it some time see what happens, if anything were I to trim it, I'd wait til Spring or warmer weather.

This is probably blackspot. The lesions are characterized by fringy margins. You may as well remove the spotted leaves now, as they will die anyway. No need to worry about blackspot in Southern California. You don't have enough rain for it to be a chronic problem. No need to worry about introducing any fungus to the garden. Either it will always be there because the climate favors it or it will rarely if ever be much of a problem. (Possible exception might be downy mildew.)

Personally I now leave the leaves on,though it does look ugly.I did remove the leaves,leaving the petioles on a 'Skeeters' once,and every branch I did died back.The leaf removal may well not have been the cause,I'm not sure,but I'm wondering if doing so caused the petioles to die prematurely,ruining the new buds beneath.As Toranado said,you may get some new growth,or just some tantalising new buds waiting to open,my Suminagashi has both.I guess the tree knows best what to do.

Brown spots on leaves, help.

swfx and Steve, Z (6Bground,5B roof) Cincy,OH thank you for your comments Citrus growing now many new shoots, doesnt look like plant is dying now. :) Brown spots are infected over all plant 4 leaves, after 1 week monitoring every leaf it looks like infection doesnt spread. Brown edges are probably from cold air that i mentioned in previous post. I have probably found another cause for brown spots. After repoting plant i though that soil is abit too cold and i heated whole pot with electric heater. Probably its Edema that i caused. Roots were at higher temp than the leaves, roots sent additional water to leaves thinking its hot but its not. Is that possible? Need your opinions. Thanks To Steve Im not using 5-1-1 mix its quick drying i know its very good but for mine situation in summer i wont be home often so i need slower draining soil. I have chosen potting mix for citrus + added perlite for better air circulation. Watering is strict, i`m writing everytime i water or fertilize the plant. Always checking the soil it its dried enough so it can be watered again. About the name clip3 i have chosen it randomly after forum moved. :)

I'm assuming this is on grass? Mow the leaves right into the soil, it's a nice winter mulching and a gentle feeding for your grasses. Very thick layers may need to be distributed out to other parts of the lawn. Overall, the leaf mass atop the grass is cutting off the air and sun from the grasses. That damages them, so mowing at least once a week is recommended for normal leaf drops. Light drops can be ignored, however, while heavy, blanket-like leaf falls should be taken care of as soon as possible.

I have to agree with pirate girl and Denise have said. My Kerri is very slow and even when she dose try to grow some leaves they keep falling off. Right now my plant is trying to grow about 5 new leaves and looks like one will not make it.Its a good thing its a same what of a medium plant because i might have had to find it a new home.

Thank you very much for all the info. I actually have 2 of this plant, and both grow VERY SLOW, not to mention one keeps dropping the new leave, if any, like yours Cindy!

Seeing those leaves were not all white, I have left them on for some time now. Perhaps, I will just remove it then. What a slow grower, sigh!!!
