I have two carnosas that I recieved from 2 friends ( one is very full 5 nice long rooted vines, the other, 2 very short pieces) both growing very nicely. My questions are about their growing habits. Every picture of this hoya or have seen in person are growing down but I found some bamboo trellis's today. the rooted one that has gone wild I put one of the trellis' in its pot and the new vines that were growing up in the air and all about I put on it. Secured them with the dragon fly clips. I guess I want to know if climbing up is okay or do they have to grow down. It looks so nice and much neater but if it must grow down then I will adjust it's spot. thanks

totally fine for them to grow on a trellis. In fact, the Lowe's in Riverdale, UT (Ogden area) has Krimson Queen growing on bamboo hoops!

I'd love to see pictures. :)

Just make sure that you don't leave growing tips clipped pointing down as it will cause the tip to die off. Once a growth spurt is long enough to wrap around and point back upward, it's ok to clip it down.

Hoya carnosa Krimson Princess has the most white of the varegated casnosa varieties, it's the one with the inner portion of the leaf being white vs Krimson Queen which has variegated leaf margins. If you are thinking of ordering cuttings there are some other species form this section (section Hoya) of the genus that are interesting and have similar flowers. Aleya's Garden has a good selection of Hoya carnosa varieties including the white flowered snowball, pink and dark pink/red flowered varieties. Some of the other Thai vendors/growers have varieties (Grey Ghost) that are uniformly covered in silver flecks so that the leaf looks like it's covered in silver dust. Hoya fungii is a great one to look into if you like Hoya carnosa. There is also a pink/red flowered species (?) that is very similar to Hoya fungii but I can't remember where I saw it. Hoya sp Doi Tung from Northern Thailand is probably in this section as well and it has beautiful leaves with prominent mid veins and stems covered in bristly hairs. The species that is often sold as Hoya salweenica and is available from Paul Shirley as Hoya salweenica GPS 02074 is also a interesting species with smaller lance shaped leaves about 4" long by 1" wide. The leaves are sparsely covered in fine hairs but the stems are completely covered in soft short hairs. The white blooms look similar to Hoya carnosas. Hoya pubicalyx is closely related to Hoya carnosa which is obvious from he flowers. I think that the Hoya pubicalyx varieties are even more interesting than those available of Hoya carnosa. Hoya dasyantha is another one that is similar to Hoya carnosa and has white flowers and medium sized veined leaves. The one species from this section that I want the most but can't seem to get my hands on is Hoya sp Kunming Kina/China or Hoya revolubilis. Having seen a friends plant made me realize that I really must have this Hoya, it's growth habit is just stunning. Overall the plant looks similar to Hoya salweenica but with much larger and more elongated leaves and the white flowers have a yellow corona vs the standard white with a red ring that is seen in salweenica and carnosa. Brad how is the light this time of year for these plants? What is your method for watering, determining watering frequency. Occasionally you will see this sort of thing happen to an otherwise healthy plant but still it makes me think that something is not quite right. It could be that these growths were damaged when repotting was done and they lost their roots. As for mealies I have to literally spray my plants with warm soapy water every time I water them if I want to stay ahead. I will use a systemic on badly affected plants but otherwise soapy water does a great job if used often. Spraying a plant a couple times a week would be your best bet until you notice the mealies are gone. Mike

That's neat Denise and I don't think I have ever seen it happen with my carnosa. I do have an unidentified species called GPS 3762 from Paul Shirley that does this and it is one of my favorites because it usually makes at least four leaves in a whorl. I have another from David Liddle with the id IML 0392 that is very similar. The only other one that I can think of right now that has this type of growth is Hoya lambii. Mike

Mentha, I think that H. carnosa rubra variegata is the proper botanical name for 'Krimson Princess." My understanding is that back in the 1970's, someone marketed the two variegates using the trade names 'Krimson Princess' and 'Krimson Queen.' I've been told it was more of a gimmick to sell the same plant that was already in distribution under a different name. Kind of like the sports of Jade. You'll see the one that's called 'Gollum' marketed as 'Shrek Ears.' It's the same plant, but give it a new name and it's like it's something NEW. But here's the thing - I don't call the solid greens that I take off my KP "rubra" because it looks nothing like the one I KNOW is rubra. So I just call it another clone of carnosa. I know - it's all terribly confusing. Which is why it's better to use the true botanical names of plants, even though it's charming to use loveable names like "Sweetheart Hoya," or "Wax Plant," or when we come up with our own special names. Hi Ann,
Here is a pic of my 1 year old H. carnosa cutting growing on a trellis. After I got it started, it just knew what to do. I rarely have to attach a vine, no dragonfly clips needed. I like it b/c it's easy to look for peduncles (not that I have witnessed that yet).

Hi Carolyn, I have a KQ growing on a trellis too. It has way to many unruly vines. It's still not my favorite hoya, but this way I can at least tolerate it. (Where's the pics of your new hoya? Please post)

Thank you all, I remember reading about the tips so they all are growing up. Boy Maid yours is so big and pretty. Is it in its original pot? Mine seems to have taken off recently in fact all my hoyas are on a growing spurt. I went away for a week and was suprised how much vineing was going on. If Bella ever gets big enough I will put her on a trellis too.

Ann, Thanks. . . I started the cuttings in a smaller pot along with a H. Compacta last year about this time. This past spring I seperarted them and put the carnosa in this pot (6"). I think this is going to have to be a permanent pot, it's committed to the trellis now and I don't know how I would ever re-pot it.

Glad to hear your hoyas are showing off for you. . .

Sorry, Maid. The kids and I have had the flu for the past week. Not much of anything has gotten done. I'm doing well to get everyone watered and misted. ;)

Ann, You can grow H. bella on a trellis? I never thought of that!

Having a mild case of flu myself these days i can relate..*sigh*
i also have a carnosa cutting growing nicely in a glazed ceramic pot:

im not really sure what i should do with it... put a pole and secure it there or a trellis?suggestions?

Hi angellilly, its totally up to you...either a trellis or just let it hang down. This one you can grow several different ways. Some have it potted in a hanging basket. Since yours is already in a pot you can use a trellis or a wire/bamboo hoop...eventually wrapping the long vines as they grow...either should work fine. Looks nice and healthy...Enjoy!
