Rainy Day Hummer Vid

Have you ever wondered what hummers do on a rainy day. Do they hide under some big tree, overhang or bush. Not always, the overhang over these feeders is not much more than a foot. But hummers still have to have energy and on cold blustery rainy days like this[low 60s] when insects are hard to come by they get what nourishment they can. Im providing a link to one vid but I think you can view another I also took today.

That is so awesome- look at them all sitting there, relaxed and calm, companionably sharing lunch.
Where in zone 6 do you live that your Hummers are so friendly? The ones I have absolutely will not share. Every evening I'll witness a hummer battle between the two that have taken up residence- one in the side yard and one in the back...

That is the reason with only two they will not share or even 3 or 4. Once enough hummers are there it becomes a losing battle and they do have to eat. And on a rainy day when food is scarce,, well. There at least 5 or 6 in my front yard right now that have been fighting almost nonstop.

Hummersteve: It is go great that you have hummers. I live in Zone5B IL and I haven't seen one yet. Big bummer, my hummingbird fever started early last fall when I seen one for the very first time. Went out and bought a couple of feeders and soon had about 20-30 hanging around for about a month. Why none this Spring? They follow this route because I seen tons of them last fall. I have had my feeders out for about 4 weeks. Still no real plants though. I do have "Lady in Red" and "Coral Nymph" (4 of each but they are still pretty small. I also have a hanger that is red filled with their favorite nest making material which I purchased at WBU.

I was trying to catch some tongue action not sure I caught it very well. The fact that he is not bothered and is able to do some much needed scratching says he's pretty relaxed on the feeder, also demonstrated by the time spent on the feeder, seemingly not bothered by my presense.

As an update on the jewelbox I had noticed a couple of flies in the water after I had put on the nectar guards, no the hummers had not eaten them, this puzzled me. So when I changed the water I noticed one of the tips had come off and the reason being one of the tabs that held them on had bent out of position so the tip could not stay on. Guess I will just use it in this manner not wanting to spend the shipping price to replace it.

Still breezy here today and I have seen a hummer on above feeder and would like to think its the same hummer, but after last nights low of 45 , Im not sure. Todays high predicted at 60.

I Love the videos you have put up for us. How many juveniles as compared to adults do you think are feeding at your feeders? Just curious as to whether you have a lot of "youngins" at this time.

Yes, many of the adult males that I have had every evening have moved out. I went a couple of days after that that there was little action here till the last couple of days where there seemed to be a flood of hummers arrive. Yes I am seeing younguns and even recently have been seeing females with nest markings so there will be more. Also if you look closely at the photo I put up of the hummzingers first usage , that bird appears to be a young male and he fought valiantly for a while trying to keep others away from it, but finally I guess he was more interested in fueling up.
