should I repot Mathilde now do U think?

I have a fairly large Mathilde that is in a terracotta pot. It is drying out quite rapidly and is growing rapidly as well. I didn't repot this spring as it didn't start growing until July, and I was just too darn busy. Is it too late in the season to pop it into a plastic pot one size larger do you think? :)

A couple of thoughts:

I do not grow this hoya but it sounds happy as is and perhaps if it is potbound it will be inclined to bloom for you. Also - am wondering why you would change from clay to plastic as it seems to grow well in clay. Is this possibly an effort to reduce the amount of water it requires? I am a fan of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' and it seems like you are growing Mathilde well. Regardless, growth may slow during the winter, and consequently, it may require less water. If it were mine, I would wait until next Spring and pot it up to clay.

I agree with Lisa on this. It seems to like where it's at. Growth usually slows down in the winter so, if anything, I would at least wait until spring. Hoya like to be potbound, so putting it into a larger pot will give it a message to make more roots, and less chance of bloom. Just adding my thoughts.

Charles, I'll be 69 this year and have citrus in heavy 22" clay pots. I also have figs in half whiskey barrels. Been rethinking that one. Anyway my husband and I move them with a 2 wheeled cart (dolly). I think that I could move the clay pots by myself if I had to - probably not the half whiskey barrels. The leverage is all wrong. If worst comes to worst, I'll top and root prune the plants to fit them in smaller pots, sort of bonsai them over time. I suppose when I get very old I may not be able to grow the plants that I like but I intend to fight it. Buylady, We move the citrus out in the Spring about mid-April and back in in the Fall about October 7th. The timing is based on frost dates here. Because the moves are only twice a year, it may be easier to coordinate it with your helper than this year. Cath

thanks- these pics are mainly from the front yard. the large tree in the first pic is a Colorado blue spruce, surrounding by smaller green giants mostly. The second pic is a norway spruce in full bloom. The last pic is a fat albert spruce- again surrounded by green giants, and a norway spruce peeking in the pic on the right. I have a few bloodgood japanese maples too to pop in some red color. Hope this helps. I know I am not up on all the latin names and such and don't claim to know as much as alot of other people here- but I enjoy doing it. Much of this hobby is trial and error. So it pays to research stuff before you pay for anything. I've lost alot of stuff too.

I'm sure there are others here with more/better info, but I would either just leave it alone, or go ahead and put it in the ground now. It doesn't seem worth it to possibly stress out the plant by messing with the roots, only to take it out of the container permanently in 6-7 months. I've planted 4 plumeria in the ground (I'm in inland So Cal) in the summer (2 late last summer, 2 this summer), and all of them are doing fine. I didn't mess with the roots at all, though - just dug a hole and followed tdogdad's directions on how he plants in the ground. When I actually planted the plumeria, I cut away the pot, put the plant in the hole, and re-filled the extra space left over. None of the plants have skipped a beat. I think the only thing you would really want to look out for is acclimating the plant to the area where you plan on planting it first. If you search "planting a plumeria in the ground" in this forum, there are several good posts about it.

Depends on how bad the health of the plant really is, but I would probably wait as well. Mine actually thrived outside all summer, though I neglected it, and like yours, is full of buds now. Christopher

Hoya Mathilde likes the cool weather seasons just like its parent Hoya serpens. I don't think that potting up now would be a bad idea if you find that the plant is drying out far too fast in clay. Then again I almost never pot in clay and every time I have repotted a Hoya from clay it has pouted because the roots inevitably get damaged.

You all brought up some good points. The plant does dry out quickly, but the days will be getting cooler soon and I won't have this problem for much longer, you're right. That sucker did take off this summer, and possibly it likes being potbound. All of the long vines have peduncles on them, but we'll see if any actually set flowers! I think what made me consider going to plastic was seeing all of this new growth and tiny leaves & peduncles and feeling a bit worried about forgetting to water it frequently. I lose a lot of new leaves that way. She's staying put anyway. Thanks again for the input!
