Is 'Vulcan' a wuss?

Planted 2011, 6 healthy eyes last year, a no show this spring. I know it tends to be late - but this is really really late. Will I replace it, or opt for something tougher?

Here is WAS last spring.

Hmmm, no experience with it. But I might suggest a really strong growing hosta, Dick Ward. I was just admiring it this morning. Talk about strong, that is this hosta.

Slugs do not bother it. I got this one in 2010 May, so it is approaching a leap year. It stays this color most all year too.

    Theresa just bought a Vulcan.

Hey Moc, look at what Dick Ward does in the sun in Michigan.

Jan, don't give up on Vulcan. It's been a vigorous grower for me. I have mine getting afternoon sun (1-7 pm). This one was not one of the supersized hostas I usually buy. Look what mine did in a year.

Here it is just home from the nursery in late April 2011:

Here Vulcan is, just a little more than a year later:

Vulcan has been an excellent grower for me. Don't give up. Maybe move it.... could have some root invasion going on.

I am watching this post closely. As moc said I have just bought one and planted it where it gets a goodly amount of morning sun and total shade in the afternoon. I am hoping it is NOT a dud.

I was hoping it would grow up with a more rounded leaf like the Elegans (sieboldiana) group but from the pics here I guess it doesn't.

Gesila, later in the year do you get scorching in the centers?

Gesila - that sure is pretty. Perhaps I will try again, hopefully in a better spot.

Don't give up on Vulcan. It took mine about 3 years to get really established, but now it is lovely. It has never leaped like Gesila's, I don't think anyone's has! but is is an attractive, medium plant.

Jan, it's been a really wierd spring here. I thought I had lost Little Red Rooster, Jack of Diamonds and Little Jay because On Stage which is usually the last to come up was up already. Lo and behold all three came back this week ... they may be struggling because of last year's drought and lack of continuous winter snow cover . Also the root competition in my hosta gardens isn't helping.

I hope yours is on its way up.

Jan, you are one zone colder than here and we have had a very mild winter.

Since I have only miniscule pips from a few plants here, I am not surprised your Vulcan has still not shown itself yet: I am surprised that many of your others have.

"Gesila" posted under a new user name, could have been a few/several months ago. She's using a new name since the GW/Houzz merge. I'll be darned if I can remember what it is, though.
