How do I get rid of this thug?
Comments (9)Does anyone else INJECT Round-Up? I've found it useful for poison ivy that is interwoven in our hedges. I get a cattle syringe and needle (I got mine at Tractor Supply) and I fill it with Round-Up and I inject a little bit directly into the stem. Poison Ivy in particular has that "woody" stem, and this way I'm assured that I actually got some of the "tactical nukes" (LOL -- love that term!) inside the plant so that it can carry the "radiation" back to the "mother ship" (roots). I haven't done a complete inspection yet, but so far I haven't noticed any new PI this year in the areas I treated last year. If anyone else is going to try this, use a SENSITIVE hand at this -- if you try to inject a whole bunch into a stem, the excess will either squirt out where you're injecting it in (all over you PLUS the plants that you're trying NOT to hit) or else the stem will burst under the pressure and the excess will spray out at random (all over you PLUS the plants that you're trying NOT to hit). Since you're putting this directly into the plant's "veins", it really doesn't take very much at all. Think of how a single drop or bit of errant misting on a leaf can kill an entire plant and you get an idea of how very little of this stuff you have to get inside the stem in order for it to be effective....See MoreSide note to getting rid of bermuda-How do you get rid of Oxalis?
Comments (9)The common yellow oxalis we have here has tiny "bulbules" (sp?), which lurk 12 -18 inches under the ground. You can easily pull up the plants, of course, but those tiny bulb things stay under the soil, and up it comes again. I once had a gardener who decided to eradicate it from a flower bed which is about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide. He actually dug up the top 2 feet of soil, and sifted it by hand to get all of the tiny bulbs out. That worked for the first year, but by 2-3 years after he did that, back the oxalis came. So, being lazy, what I do is just admire it in the Spring, except where it is trying to smother other plants. Then just pull it out around those plants. By late Spring here it has died down, and I pretend it is gone. Of course, it comes up again the next Spring. It is one of our first blooming plants to bloom (starts Jan/Feb), so I just regard it as such and let it be mostly. One of my cats likes to eat it (we used to eat it as children - we called it "sour grass"). Jackie...See MoreWhat's this - and how do I get rid of it!
Comments (27)Seeing the "free Tansy plants, u dig?" comment made me snicker, it just might have worked. Several years ago we drove past a house that had just been sold, it had been vacant for several years and the front yard, a BIG front yard, well, the whole yard was a solid stand of bamboo. In front of it was this sign "FREE BAMBOO U DIG". We drove by a day or two later and you'd think there was the garage sale to end all garage sales going on but the people had buckets, containers, sacks, you name it they were in there digging and prying and pulling. Two weeks later the ground was bare, driving past nowadays all you see is a green lawn. I wonder how many of those energetic souls are regretting the day they dug the freebies. Comments (3)I'll jump right in and maybe sound rude, but I don't mean to be: WHAT grass? 2) is this your first winter in FL? HostaHeaven, I'll bet you came from that Land Where Hostas Grow. I've heard of that lovely place. And the cold and snow. Pic #1 ? If it stays small, leave it. If it is fast spreading with a tap root, pull it before it blanket's the area. You'll know the difference. The obnoxious one usually starts to take over in summer rainy season, so if you haven't seen that one yet, maybe just keep an eye on this. Or, maybe it's setting your yard up to expand next summer. Help! WHAT IS IT? Pic #2 Dayflower (Commelina diffusa). Green with tiny blue/purple flowers... what's not to like? And you didn't have to plant it!...See Morecaliloo
