H. Carnosa Variegated Krimson Queen smells like chocolate when in bloom. It grows by the West window with 3hours of direct sun - in my house. It is about 4 years old and I had a first bloom when I moved it outside this summer.

Your Hindu Rope will love the location - most hoyas grow in East location with great success.
I have a bunch above my kitchen sink in East window - they grow like weeds (except Hindu - which is a slow grower for me- )
Also  some variegated hoyas will get this beautiful red colored new leaves when exposed to some direct light.

My understanding is that the typical "grandmother's wax plant" was the regular green carnosa. All the carnosas smell like chocolate to me. So does compacta (I've never been clear on whether or not this is really a mutation of carnosa), but to me it's more like what a friend called "Chocolate X-Lax." Lol.
I agree that they'll love the sun from an eastern window or a western one. The southern exposure would be too much. They'll also love your humidifier!!

I was wondering about whether Hoyas love humidity or not. I have a humidifier in my LR, which is where I house a lot of my plants, Hoyas included. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the good information! I'm very happy to have a suitable place for the hoya. I never realized there were so many varieties. I've been looking around on this forum and I'm definitly going to have to learn more about them and collect some more:)

Yes, they can be very addictive, but happily so!! You got lots of good advice here, but you asked a good question abt the sunlight, so I'd like to address it.

This kind of light (while it may sound contradictory, it's really not) can also be referred to as bright but indirect. This seems to be what Hoyas like & is mostly recommended, as in nature they tend to grow up into other trees, so they like dappled light (kind of pee-a-boo through some other branches).

I only have western windows, so the compromise in my apmt is off a west window, at a right angle to it, I put up 3 shelves for my Hoyas collection (30+ at last count). because of the western windows, they get very strong afternoon light in summer, but less so at other times of the year. The room always stay bright, but the sun is not always directly on the Hoyas, which it would be if they lived on the window sills rather than on the wall at a right angle to it.

Whereas on the window sills themselves, in the most direct light I keep the Aloes, & the Crassulacae (Jade plants & their various cousins). They prefer the most direct sun they can get, so I aim to please them that way.

Hope this clarifies the issue somewhat. Enjoy your Hoyas; who knows, we're likely to see lots more of you here!

Marcy, uh oh!! DH's mom gave him a couple African violets and my Mom gave me one and that was it for him. It's only been a few months and he already has 14! I told him I hoped he didn't get addicted because I wanted room for a variety of houseplants, not all one type. He said, "Yeah, I'll be careful":-)

Pirate Girl, thanks for claryifying that! My den is very bright all day in all seasons so I think they would like it there then. I forgot to mention that the west windows are blocked by decicious trees in summer but the east windows are always bright. Yep, I'll probably be hanging around here now:-)
