UPDATE! Spotted caterpillar again. He has at least tripled in size and is, without question, a Monarch! He is devouring the Butterfly Weed (???) like there's no tomorrow! Very happy! Anything I should try to do for him vis a vis winter? Bronze Fennel and a shot at parsley, roger that Susan. APOLOGIES Miss Sherry! I live off Highland Road in between Lee Dr. and Staring Ln. I won't say the neighborhood, but since I have a .75+ acre lot you'll know it isn't either of the 'Woods' (Woodgate or Woodstone) and may very well be able to narrow it down to 2-3 neighborhoods. You'd be wrong (probably), though, as my neighborhood is exceptionally small and old, built some before and most after WWII (my home is pre-war). Well, maybe you'd be right... lol. I'm relatively well insulated from traffic, which is indeed brutal. My Butterfly Weed is Asclepias curassavica and seems to absolutely be a host for Monarchs. My Lantane is Anne Marie, and while I bought small specimens, the will eventually reach 2x2 feets in size. Is that large end or small? I am VERY INTERESTED in gertting Passiflora incarnata & caerulea but shall wait for Spring. Do you know of any reputable nurseries from which to buy them online, if my local nurseries fail me? I use, in oder of preference: Louisiana Nursery (Perkins); Cleggs (Siegen) and Lowes (also Siegen, in that pooly accessible Siegen Marketmplace just south of I-10). Occassionally Ace's Hardware on Highland where Kenilworth dead ends into Highland. They have loads of seed packets which nurseries, oddly, don't seem to carry much of. While I'm thinking of it, I've had terrible success in growing from seeds. A packet of 50 may yield, if they yield ANY, less than half a dozen! It's frustrating. I've used those minature greenhouses where you plant each seed(s) in a pre-made tiny pot and cover with transparent plastic, tiny seed-starter pots that I've treated in a number of different ways. I have set them on the ground (brick) outdoors, in planter saucers together in groups, and all of the abive on a wrought iron patio furniture table. I've used Miracle Grow to water them and rainwater (we collect it in a large drum). I've kept them constantly moist, downright wet and dry-ish. Any ideas? Back to Passionvines. I was in love wih them before I knew they had any use for butterflies whatsoever. (i really believ at this point, as trifling a cause for Him as it sounds, that God is aiding me in my endeavors - far too many coincidences. another example i have not 1 but 2 fully mature Tulip Trees > likely b/c it doesn't get near as much sun as the one close to my primary butterfly garden> Why He has chosen to help me in this endeavor....mysterious ways, etc). I wish He'd turn some of His grace toward my Gingko which seems to be having problems. We have lost 1 already. The kiwi are in the ground (finally) but I'm worried that one may not be able to get he full sun when it begins to need it (3 years!!). Easily remedied by removing 2 small/medium tallow trees if it proves necessary. I have never liked these volunteer weed-trees as I call them. They grow everywhere and so fast! In mid-Summer I must make a circuit of the yards to tear up foot high tallow trees that have hidden along fence lines, etc. or in what we call 'Jeremy's Garden.' The favorite in our yard last year was the Scarlet Runner bean, which bloomed most of the year (the fresh beans are a bit "sticky" for my liking, but the dried beans were tasty, which is a nice bonus!). There was almost always one or two hummers out there, even while I worked in the bed (they let me know of their annoyance that I was keeping them from their plant). Since it can be trellised, this one is great for smaller spaces. They were also fond of the borage plant which bloomed profusely all season long (it was also a major favorite of bees, that thing was constantly humming, if you're looking to help some other pollinators), unfortunately that one might be a bit too gangly for you. A close third was the rat tail radish- again maybe a bit too gangly for you, but the hummers loved those and all their flowers (plus you get tons of edible pods if thats your thing, just from a single plant). We don't have a feeder, or at least don't put it out much, but the long bloom plants keep them around most of the year. They especially seem to enjoy a fine ledge to perch on, such as a clothes line or garden fencing mesh (I've seen some perch on the garden fence to have a shower from the sprinkler before), so that might help encourage them to kick around if possible.

We have just installed a 2 man Jetta tub and wanted grab bars for it. Since we used oil rubbed bronze faucets, I had problems finding what I wanted. A local plumbing store was going to order them for me when I found them at Lowe's. I had asked repeatedly and was told they didn't have them in ORB. Well, this is called Venetian Bronze or something like that. It is close enough. It is a Moen product and is ADA approved with a 500 pound pull capacity. They only had the 16 inch one, but I was going to check into a longer one. Thanks for the link above it has them there! We just got this bathroom finished a couple of days ago. Now, granted this tub is not a handicap type one, but we wanted the bars for practical use now and need in the future. The small one is placed vertical on a stud at the edge of the tub. I already know that I want and need one lower. They gutted my other bath this week and the tub/shower is being replaced with a shower that will be handicap accessible--but we are adding glass doors that can be removed later if needed. This shower will have the grab bars and I think we are going to add one beside the toilet in there. Both new toilets are the ADA higher ones and I love the one that is new to master bath. The master bath is large enough to get a wheelchair around in, but the hall bath was very inaccessible. We found this out during the past few years as our parents health failed and we had them here for extended times. We decided to do this bath remodel Christmas when my Dad's health failed to the point that he could not remain at the assisted living. We were going to move him in with us and remodel the bath. However, we lost him in late January. We looked at the overall picture and realized that although we have now lost all four parents, we will have a need for this at some point. So, we went ahead with the plans--just took a little more time doing it. We also have taken out the small hall bath door and they are installing a much wider pocket door so that a wheelchair can go through it. Although I do have solid wood vanities in both baths, we decided to leave them. They will be able to be replaced with a pedestal or something more handicap assessible if needed. I am adding a link to pics of the new master bath. You can see the bar on the right side of the front of tub. Again, it is not a tub that you would think of in this way, but wanted to share the grab bar there. We will add another one. They are also strongly attracted to water fountains/falls since they like to drink water in flight. Many times they would come right up to my watering wand if I keep it held up a little high. This way I can get them pretty close to me (within a foot) and watch these wonders of nature up close and personal. It does not have to red to attract them. In my observations they will check out anything that sort of sticks out. So plants with long stalks seem to be attractive. Also they do not like to be close to the ground. So raising up your potted plants a couple of feet seems to do the trick. On a rare occasion I found this hummer close to the ground checking out a P. afra plant of all things.

Thats really funny...but I remember watching funnyest home videos and some guy had nectar in his belly...he put a little plastic red flower into it and the hummers accualy drank from it....it was awsome...

GrandPapaMike: I think I'll just stick to hangin' 'em on the patio. (After all, I can't see anything close up 'cept through the bottom of my glasses!!!)

Getting ready to replace two 48oz feeders with 96'ers. That'll make four 96oz feeders up, but we're only putting 64 ounces in each one and so far only have to refill them every other day!

Ok...I needed a minute or two to pick myself back up off the floor and wipe the laughter tears from my eyes. I kinda said "Oh Jeez" when I looked at that hat setup. Then when I read the mention of the raccoon I went back for another look...that's when I fell out laughing. Good thing my windows aren't open or my neighbors would think I'm nuts. Do you suppose that's a "stuffed" raccoon? The sunglasses are a nice touch..sorta like hiding in a duck blind?! The whole thing is just TOO funny.

BTW Frank...just use longer rods to hang the feeders from, then your glasses will work better. lol

That's terribly ironic for me. Just this morning driving around in the car I was thinking of creating a living will that stated if I was ever in an accident that left me paralized or vegetative that I should be set outside once a day with my hat on. And on my hat one of my little Artline Bouquet feeders should be clipped to the bill.

I know that sounds horrible to common folk but Hummerlovers would understand.

One of the BBC radio programs has a funny bit about the host feeding Hummers from his mouth...

Marcia - Yes, this guy was on the Letterman show last week - they had a camera crew set up in his garden - he put on the helmet, but no hummers showed up - just a cardinal sitting behing him on a fence, and that racoon. It was quite amusing, mostly because of Dave's comments! I recall seeing an article on this guy a few years ago in a Birds and Blooms magazine.

nuthatch: You don't, unless you happen across some that have been sitting on a store shelf somewhere. Perky-Pet quit making them a few years ago, so the only ones available are leftovers that for some reason or another never sold.

Got a tip from a member of this forum last year about a nursery out of state that had 36 of them. I bought 10, (6 for myself and 4 for GrandPapaMike in Riverside.), and referred someone else to them a month or so ago. They bought the last one the place had, so unless you come across more or someone else does and lets everyone here know, there's not much chance of getting them.

I watched this guy on Letterman's show! Although I missed the raccoon's appearance. If Letterman had ever quit making the man talk and laugh, he might have had a hummer or 2.

It should be interesting I feel like I have something like it since everytime I'm out weeding near the beebalm I hear them buzzing by me just can't see them oh well at least I know they're nearby. Sarah

lol Sarah - first time I went to sons in Tucson,,I kept swatting at the "dang" bumblebees....when he finially noticed my nose stuck in the flower bed,,he told me to stay put..and "look but don't scream"....... it was hummingbirds.....and their little babies!!For once I did as I was told/ and just sat there mesmorized as they just flew about........what a thrill,, and that is how I got hooked on these little critters LOL

thank you, sarah, for the heads up. this was easily one of the 'top ten' funniest things I have ever seen. the man's name is dave leslie, and he was at the wood lake nature center in richfield, minnesota. letterman worked him hard, asking him how many hummer eggs it takes to make an omelette. leslie zapped letterman right back, asking if the host knew why hummingbirds hum. letterman walked right into it, and they and the audience got so tickled that when leslie laughed, the feeders would bounce up and down dripping nectar everywhere. this would make letterman and the audience laugh more, which would make leslie laugh more, which would make the feeders bounce and drip nectar more... I was about crying I thought it was so hilarious.
the raccoon was real. it just walked by while they were shooting. there was a seed feeder on a pole nearby, off-camera in most shots, and the raccoon was scoping out the fallen seed, I think.
although he didn't get any hummingbirds during the show, if I understood him correctly, he said that he did indeed get hummers to visit his feeder helmet.

Navymom it's so frustating! I always here them buzzing when I'm weeding Or if more that one I hear them buzzing and their high pitched voice. Even if I stay still nine out of ten times I never see them they are so well camoflaged in the flowers. (maybe I need new glasses)!

Standard that was so funny last night! But I fell asleep before the end so hummers never did show up? Sarah

Ed - NOT me....... my kids called me this a.m. (after watching the "hat" episode ) and all I heard was "DON'T EVEN THINK of it , Ma!!!!!!!! ) Whooooooooo me? LOL (Let's just say.......I can't wait for the next FAMILY cookout) :o)
