Hi everyone,

I got my cuttings from Jennifer today in the mail! How sweet is that she sent me two bonus cuttings: diptera and Tanna Island! Take a look at my new gems! Enjoy!

Wow Moonwolf, lucky you ! They look so cute, now dig up some more names, lol. I can't wait for more, myself. I am waiting until my last haul from Joni are all content and thriving in their new spaces before I make another trek down there.

The Hindu Rope looks beautiful. I bought an old established plant last year that has decided that outside in the blazing Florida heat is its new favorite home and is thriving like a champ. All this after nearly kicking the bucket last winter inside. I still have no idea what a compacta penduncle looks like.

Hello everyone! Thanks for the link, Ming. How's it going in Arizona for you? Things are ok so far in TX, although grad school's been a bit rough. Hanging in there, though... pirate girl...I am wanting to say Karen, is that right? Nice to hear from you! I've not been online much for a good month with traveling home for the holidays and such. Glad to hear the cutting is doing well. My davidcummingi is blooming right now. The link shows all the new ones so far, the addresses show some better pics of some of the plants. I've got a couple cuttings on order that will be shipped when they are ready. The imperialis was received through a trade with a fellow GWber, it has been doing wonderfully since I got it in the fall. I think the aroid you are referring to is not around anymore, I need to go through my pics someday and update. Many things did not survive my moving. However, the hoyas have loved the move. Right now I'm just keeping the cacti and succulent things mainly in the GH, I had some hoyas in there until before the ice storm in Dec. Now that the ground is so dry here, I am afraid to run my little electric heater so everything is in the house for now. Not that my setup isn't safe, I take every precaution I can think of, but it only takes a spark right now. We're I think 8 inches below normal for rainfall. Well, thanks for keeping in touch everyone! I was lucky enough to receive a new laptop for Christmas so hopefully I will be able to browse at home and be a little more active here. :) Kim

Yeah, I've worried about upside-down leaves, too, but cv Joy really exaggeratedly moves its leaves to face the sun, so maybe it will reorient them again. You'll have to let us know. I've always meant to keep an eye on things like that. I agree that lucardenasiana has really cool leaves. I don't think a vein runs around the edge of the leaf - it just has a very strange edge to its leaves. There are a number of Hoyas with interesting leaf edge characteristics, and I find this one of the most attractive qualities for some reason. Yes, paziae is definitely very inclined to branch and very shrublike. I find its growth habit absolutely lovely. It puts out tons of new growth at once and, since its new leaves are translucent and raspberry colored, it looks like a shattered stained-glass window. For some reason, this will always be a favorite of mine - everything about it is delicate yet extremely vigorous. @ goddess Ha! Not the best sample of my handwriting, I'm afraid - I wrote those so sloppily! Normally my labels are much neater and more comprehensive, but I was in a super-hurry! I do study languages, but it has nothing to do with my handwriting - it's been more or less like that since high school. I went to a jr. high where we had to hand in our work in all caps and afterward my handwriting just ended up as a mixture of caps and lowercase. It has been my experience that Americans are the only ones who enjoy my handwriting. Europeans tend to have much more tidy and uniform penmanship, I think. And when I lived in Germany they sternly claimed they couldn't read it at all. @ Denise I definitely am hoping to do a trade with you this year!! :) I've never lost a cutting from you - they're so healthy!

My Latest Addition to my Hoya Collection: Imbricata

May I make a suggestion? Hoya imbricata likes it very wet. yes, this species grows in very wet conditions and then as it matures, it develops into a clinging vine that will climb even on cement. Start the cutting(s) in a hanging basket (six inch pot size is fine) and fill it with LFS mixed with perlite, orchid bark-fine grade. Ball the stem end for where you plan to insert into the media around a ball of LFS and plant=wedge this ball into your loose but wet media. This plant will develop roots quickly and then start making searcher vines seeking places to cling to. At this time, you can tie a piece of fern totem, redwood totem, cedar fence section, etc next to it. The clinging vine will start to make feeder roots attach itself to its host. Do not sever the connection right away. Instead grab some LFS around the base of the stems that have reached from the pot and slowly do a reverse air layer in making the new area grow roots into this wet moss. As soon as your host support is covered and roots are visible, you can make the severing from the pot. But keep this vines wet. They easily flower and side branch. I also recommend placing a nylon stocking filled with MagAmp and osmocote/nutricote and hang it above the totem, wood or stake and water and wet this stocking when doing so.

Poseidon, I've already decided on a name for compacta: Nellie after Nellie Olson. It was either that or Shirley after Shirley Temple lol. Both of their curly hair remind me of compacta's vines.

LOL..you guys crack me up with the names. Reminds me of when I first got married & moved to a farm. I named all of the calves, pigs, sheep & even the chickens. I made the calves little nameplates for their stalls. It was so fun.
However, I have never named plants by cute names. It is too hard for me to try to remember their botnical names, expecially when you have a couple hundred to keep track of. Ha. But anyway...your names are cute and it is a fun way to endear them to you.
