Comments (7)Oh arcy, that is great. Painting them brown is a good idea. I have had a white deer for two years now and can not find what to plant around it. I am in zone 5 so Rosemary can only be used as an annual. Ivy takes a long time and I don't want the "naked" deer sitting in the middle of the garden for years. The only vine that I know that grows really well here is poison ivy...not sure that would be a good idea. LOL Let us know what you plant and don't forget the pictures....See MoreTrees: Public Enemies #1-AND-Guardian Angels #1
Comments (20)Silver/Water maples are the worst... just finished digging out roots from a bed thats nearly 20 feet away from 40 foot tall water maple..but really anything with a feathering, surface dwelling root system sucks... no experience with fruit or nut trees... but I don't like the idea of something else to clean up off the ground and the fruit or whatever falling and beating the crap out of my plants.... plus the birds... oh bird eats cherry... bird poops cherry on my hosta... great I'm planting eastern white pines here in Kentucky now to shade an acre of our property that used to be pasture.... I like the idea of pine needles as mulch and since all of our current trees are deciduous... I wanted some evergreen action. Pines tend to keep the ground dry though... so irrigation is necessary...Some populations of slugs hate pine as well.. Lots of people like oak... acorns attract squirrels too, which are fun. The oak tree is epic as well... Black Walnut hulls and some other varieties of walnuts contain juglone which is a natural selective herbicide... note that les says it does lots of the weeding for him... though other ornamental/flowering plants you have and want to plant may not like it lol.... Just some thoughts.. John...See MoreNew addition Guardian Angel
Comments (9)Mocc. . .from the reading I have been doing it would seem that plant is NOT Guardian Angel. Some people saying they can revert to their parent Blue Angel (green) in the wrong light etc., but I think that is a bit of a myth. The best comment I could find was from someone that said they worked with young Guardian Angel plants for years. Their opinion was that the colour could vary greatly. Their advice was to buy the most striking/colorful plant you can find as the colour at immaturity is more indicative of the colour at full maturity. I was particularly struck at the colour of this young one, so I bought it (even though it was the most expensive small hosta at that store by far, it has 3-4 eyes, so it will save me 2 years of growing). I just hope it keeps it's colour and is not overly affected by too much light. Nice plant Don!...See MoreGuardian Anger with a plain eye...
Comments (14)whatever you do.. do something.. try the easy way this fall ... now ... if it doesn't work ... try again in spring ... in my sand ... if the sand is super dry .... the plant will break off at the crown .. and you may or may not get the dormant buds as noted ... after 2.5 inches of rain last week ... i have found that the whole eye plus roots comes out ... go figure on that ... tape the offender together... run both hands down as low as you can go ... set you feet one behind the other ... and gently apply pressure until something gives ....if you put both feet next to each other.. there is a good chance that when it snaps.. you will end up on your butt .... lets avoid such.. in case the neighbors are watching.. lol .. the blue should be blue angel ... i do not recommend cutting a wedge of pie out of it... i have had more problems with that causing severe reversion of size .. than with any other method.. besides its august.. and if you don't properly sterilize... you might intro rot into the equation ... ken...See MoreSteve Massachusetts
