Hoya macrophylla and related species

Does anyone know if Hoya polystachya has been reclassified as Hoya clandestina? I have them as both being described by Blume and along with Hoya tjadasmalangensis as being closely related to Hoya macrophylla but all as distinct species. I also have Hoya clandestina listed as included under Hoya macrophylla in the Asclepiadaceae issue of The Illustrated Handbook Of Succulent Plants. There are only a limited number of Hoya in the book so the other species are not listed for cross reference. I really need some good books on Hoya that have more species listed.

Do you get "Stemma"? In the last issue, it talks about the different Hoya "section/complexes." All of the ones you mention fall into the same group. These are the Hoya types that I am most attracted to - I have 14 of the 51 listed, and I have some that are crosses of those mentioned. If you haven't seen the article, I suggest you look it over. I think Stemma is a good source of info.

Denise I did take a look at the article in Stemma and that is why I was confused about the status of the species I mentioned. All of those species were listed as members in the Hoya pottsii group as distinct species. When I looked up Hoya macrophylla in my book it mentioned that Hoya clandestina was in their terms "included" under the species macrophylla. I also noticed that someone mentioned on another website that Hoya clandestina is the newly accepted name of Hoya polystachya.
I am interested in getting more Hoya species that are similar to Hoya polystachya vegetatively but hopefully without too many duplicates. I guess I will just have to take my chances. So of the 14 species you have from the pottsii complex what would you say is your favorite for foliage?

Hi quinn, Its pretty hard to tell why the leaves would be droopy? I lost over half of my Var. macrophylla leaves due to cold damage. I had no idea that this hoya was that cold sensitive(at least mine is). I put it in the garage since I didn't have anymore room inside the house. It ended up being in the garage for 10 days and we had very cold temps, the garage probably got around 40's inside. I only have about 1/3 of leaves on the plant left and I'm still waiting to see if its going to fully recover. Over half...if not more of the leaves started to turn yellow and fell off. I'm not sure if what you're describing is from too cold since your leaves are not yellowing. It does get that pretty red edges when its in bright light. Keep an eye on it and if you can, see if you can tell what temperature it gets near that window at night? You can always check the roots and see if the soil is overly wet or too dry? Good luck!

Hi Karen, Unfortunately, the little leaves on macrophylla were more near the beginning of the vine, so I just cot the whole thing off. I didn't want to try and untangle the mother to get one which is growing on one of those hoops and make a big mess, and I would have, lol. I plan of putting them all in a small pot with soil tom and hope they root ok and the two bare ones will eventually grow leaves. It's funny you mentioned kerrii. I tried to root a long bare vine (no leaves) and it just wouldn't root and then it eventually died. I tried again another time, and this time, that one had a couple of leaves and it rooted like a charm! Since it happened to you too, that makes me wonder why "NOT" having leaves makes a difference in root production. Thanks for the information, I think I'll wait for leaves from now on before trying to root anymore cuttings. Wish me luck with these three! Billy Rae

Paula I think you may have matched the wrong photo up with the caption. Hoya subquintuplinervis does have thick, rigid and similarly veined leaves to my Hoya sp Sulawesi but it was originally collected in Thailand and my plant is from the large island of Sulawesi which is located off of the eastern shore of Kalamantan on the Island of Borneo and below the Philippine islands which apparently most heavily influence the flora of the Sulawesi. I included a map of South East Asia in case anyone wanted to take a look. It is interesting to look up the locations where many of the unidentified Hoya species were collected, Islands like Ambon, Palawan, Haraku and Molukken. Part of determining the proper name for a species lies in the area of it's origin. Some species have a very large range while others are endemic so even though many Hoyas look alike they may in all reality not be as closely related as they appear. Many of the smaller islands are obviously not included on the map but there are several of the ones I mentioned. Mike Here is a link that might be useful:

The plant in Panama is actually related to Oleanders, and is Thevetia peruviana, or Yellow Oleander. It is also grown in hotter parts of southern California,(especially in the low desert), and south Florida, but does not like frost or cool summer weather as along the California coast. Podocarpus species do not have showy flowers per se, but instead are more notable for forming fleshy fruits if both male and female trees are present. They don't usually fruit in northern California, but the commonly grown Podocarpus gracilior can be quite messy in fruit in southern California. With great age, both P. gracilior and P. mcarophyllus become forest giants, but are also slow enough growing to be used as foundation shrubs in residential landscapes. Unfortunately they are too often planted right next to house walls and below roof overhangs, where they need to be butchered to prevent outgrowing their spot.

When I went back through the list, I counted 18 that I have - several of them are new this year. But I think since I've obviously gravitated to this "complex" so much, it must be my favorite!

Macrophylla will probably always be my favorite. But as some of the new ones grow, I'm sure it could become hard to nail down a true "favorite." But it's possible that meredithii could take over the first place spot - I'm in awe of the markings. I love my nicholsoniae, which I grow on the top shelf of my GH - the new leaves are so shiney. I haven't gotten any flowers on it this year yet, but last year, I got one bloom on it and they're gorgeous...

H. subquintuplinervis just started growing for me, but it looks like it's going to be a stunner. And if you like large leaves, I got a cutting of rigida from Awanda this summer and the first leaf on the cutting is 7.5" x 3" - it's just starting to grow, so I'm very anxious to see if they'll stay that large for me!

I know what you mean about the confusion in the way some people describe one species as the "same" as another. I was told that my nicholsoniae was "another form" of pottsii. So my assumption was that it would be silly to get a pottsii. Well, after reading this article and seeing all the species that fall into this complex and how much they differ, pottsii will go back on my list...

I think I will have to add the variegated Hoya macrophylla to my want list and possibly one of the varieties of pottsii that has red leaves.
So far I have Hoya acuta, Hoya limoniaca, Hoya meredithii, and Hoya polystachya from this group of plants. I love the large leaved species but I am also quite impressed with my Hoya meredithii (small leafed variety) so I think I will have to add a few more from that group of plants that resembles Hoya finlaysonii as well. I know that you like Hoya kerii so have you ever considered getting Hoya deykeae because of the similar leaf shape along with the veining of finlaysonii?

I have hoya deykeae I got mine from Asiatica Nursery and I really like it, it is growing it's first leaf since I got it in the spring. I am also a big fan of kerrii and have alot of the ones you mentioned above meredithii, finlaysonii, 2 macrophylla, variegated macrophylla, acuta, limoniaca, pottsii, subquintuplinervis, nicholsoniae. I have been looking for polystachya but have been unsuccessful.

Hey Jan,
When I said polystachya I was meaning specifically polystachya. Iml 1590 ( I saw a picture of Sara's - from Garden web and asked her what her hoya was.) Sorry I didn't specify in my origional message.

Are there different clones of polystachya's?
