Roselovers - How is Your Fall Flush?

The fall flush is well underway here in my garden and I must say my roses are outdoing themselves! Most are in their third year and are established enough to really put on a show. The ones that aren't currently in full bloom are covered with buds and new red growth. Here are some standouts -

Miss Caroline,this is the first year for this rose in my garden but she is a keeper with a wonderful scent!

Old Blush

Anne Olivier, I grew the Red Salvia with my roses this year for the first time and was really pleased with the combination especially during the heat of summer when the was nary a bloom on the roses.

The Fairy

Vincent Godsif, a definite workhorse of the garden. Rarely out of bloom!

Nova,at your swap,you gave me a Anna Olivier. It has grown so much.She has given me two blooms thus far. The one on the bush now is just about perfect. A most beautiful rose.
The Safrano that Marcia gave me last year is full of leaves and buds,also flowering. My knockout is being a knockout. So many blooms on it. My old blush is also full of blossoms. Now that I know her name LOL.
I also got blooms from Natchitoches Noisette and Vincent Godsiff. All the other OGR are getting lots of new leaves.
They all look so healthy. I gave them all !/2 of a fish each,rotted compost from our kitchen scraps and rotted horse manure for a good kick. They are all in a new,
large,rose bed. Plenty of room to walk around each plant
to look and smell. It was allot of work but well worth it.
When you guys come to visit you will see.

I don't have any established rose bushes yet, just happy the plants made it through that scorching summer.

The planting bed came with the house although it was filled with bird of paradise which was tortuous to remove (ugh).
Although this is the north side it gets a lot of sun in the summer and enough sun in the winter because it's away from the house's shadow for half a day.
I found the roses grow better here on the north side than southern exposure which can be brutal. I'm giving the south side to tomatoes.

Well, its been thunderstorming the past 2 days since I started this thread so I still haven't been able to get out there and start the cleanup. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, DH pointed out to me that my entire newly-planted lily bed (of over 300 bulbs) had been ravaged by deer. These lilies were only a couple weeks away from blooming and were chewed right down to stubs. As many of you know, true lilies from bulbs will only put out one flowering stalk per year and if it is cut there will be no flowers that year. I spent a fortune on bulbs in the fall, not to mention the backbreaking labor and was so close to enjoying their long-awaited blooms. The deer have been a problem this year with munching on my roses but at least that rosebed are all modern roses that can bloom again....the lilies are done for. It's getting more and more difficult to not give up. Beetle season will be arriving as soon as the sun returns. But as DH pointed out, no matter what, I could never stop being a gardener. Its in my blood and in my heart, for better or worse. This year has certainly seen the worst! (sigh) Celeste Lily stalks chewed down by deer.....

Ah, Diane - that makes sense to explain why things won't kick back in for the fall once you pass a certain point. Weak sun affecting the plant's photosynthesis must mean it can't generate enough energy to get past the bud stage even if the buds come out. Not that I've been over-blessed with buds either - it's like the roses decided they'd already met their criteria for number of blooms in the spring and they were done for the season. Speaking of seasons in Idaho and Spokane, I noticed an interesting phenomenon this week. I was in Seattle for work, and driving in from the airport I noticed that their trees in zone 7 (or 8?) were WAY more advanced than ours in zone 5 Nebraska. Clearly that must have something to do with how far north Seattle is from us, even though it's warmer. You'd think their fall would be later, but it's not. I wonder if spring is also delayed there because of the distance north - do the tulips ever bloom past the first week of May in those climates? Just curious - one of those minor little puzzles that distract me from wanting to kick the roses into higher gear. Cynthia

nova I have the same feelings as you about wanting own-root heirloom roses and have been adding them as fast as budget allows HOWEVER....reading about own-root roses in Florida has me convinced that for longevity they should be grafted onto fortuniana stock (itself an heirloom rose). Malcolm Manners at Florida Southern College has written articles to this effect. Namely that 15 years is the most you can get from own-root heirlooms. (maybe 15 years is more than enough time, lol) It would be fun to learn how to graft own-root heirlooms onto Fortuniana because heirlooms really are SO much better than hybrids in Florida, less disease etc. It's very hard to find nurseries offering grafted heirlooms (coolroses in West Palm Beach is one mentioned by thonotorose. I don't spray any of my plants, that's why I prefer heirlooms but I am always susceptible to a pretty rose face even a hybrid :-) Denise

Felix- Hello! I am glad to hear Anne Olivier is doing well for you. Your little Cracker rose is putting out new growth and as soon as it is big enough I will bring it down to you and see your new rose bed!

naplesgardener- Love the arbor and bed! What do you have planted on the arbor? Patience is the key, I have found, with roses. Especially, if like me, you buy smaller own root roses. Most of mine started out as 1 quart roses because all I could afford was $5 or $6 for a rose. Next year your bed will bed a show stopper!

I have TOO MANY climbers next to the arbor. lol. I plan to move 2 to another spot and put a post up for support.

Right now there is Crepuscule, Golden Showers, E. Veyrat Hermanos and Reve D'or. Yes I love yellow roses.

Your rose photos are inspirational. The foliage is as nice as the blossoms.

I'm not seeing much of a flush this year since I gave them a big summer haircut, trying to outsmart the thrips. Here are a couple of pictures of one of my year round bloomers, LD Braithwaite. There are a lot of buds that aren't evident in the shots. This time of the year the blooms aren't all destroyed by thrips. This rose would be huge. I cut about 2-3' about 3 times a year. As you can see it is still well over the 6' fence. It grows tall and narrow, which is great for a small garden. This rose holds up beautifully in the vase too.

Nancy - LD Braithwaite is a beautiful rose! I will have to look into it! Most of mine are teas and chinas so not much as cut roses with a couple of exceptions.

naplesgardener - I guess you do like yellow roses! How do the ones you are growing hold their color? The yellows I grow usually end up being more cream then yellow.

Nova, LD holds up for a good week in the vase. One of my best for cut flowers.
Felix, Thanks, I believe this is the 4th year but was one of those roses that took off right away. I don't think that there has ever been a time when it didn't have at least some blooms on it. Mine is on fortuniana rootstock. I don't know if anyone sells it on fortuniana any more although Cool Roses in West Palm is getting into some of the english roses so they may have it. It does get black spot, but I spray weekly and keep it under control . I have almost 50 roses on my little lot so the poor things are a little close causing more fungus problems than if they had some breathing room.

re: yellow heirloom roses. Because they are planted on the north side they don't get fully sun-bleached. I've discovered that "north-side" in Zone 10 Florida gets plenty of sun for almost everything.
I have very little tree shade anywhere.

I've only got two rose bushes, and only one of them is blooming right now...
This is Blue Girl, which is, as you can see, more like lavender.
